A 5-star hotel in Rennes? The Balthazar Hôtel & Spa
The Balthazar Hôtel & Spa is a luxurious 5-star hotel belonging to the MGallery hotel collection, nestled in the heart of Rennes. It is housed in a stunning Rennes residence entirely renovated in a contemporary and chic style, yet where you immediately feel “right at home” thanks to a very attentive welcome. During our stay, we stayed in superior room #308 overlooking the hotel’s inner courtyard. The bedding is, of course, incredible, and the soundproofing is perfect, which is extremely pleasant. As for breakfast, we really enjoyed ourselves. The products are delicious and mostly homemade, which adds a significant plus. In short, we truly loved our short stay in this high-standing hotel that lives up to its stars. We just didn’t get the chance to try the restaurant, which is apparently very well-rated. That will be for next time…
If you want to enjoy the hotel’s Nuxe spa sensory area, you can book a one-hour slot when reserving your room. Please note, however, that this is not a private booking of the spa—you won’t be alone—but it is designed to prevent too many people from being in the spa at the same time. This 300 m2 space is open to both hotel guests and outside visitors. It features a pool with water at 30°C, equipped with a hot tub, hydromassage jets, a counter-current swimming lane, as well as a sauna and a hammam.
A great idea: have a signature cocktail at the hotel bar (signature cocktails price €21 / creative cocktails €18 / mocktails €14).

An unusual hotel in Rennes? The Magic Hall
This unusual hotel is set in a former 19th-century military barracks, located today in the middle of a residential block (which makes it extremely quiet). It’s quite different from traditional hotels, I found, and the team is atypical and friendly. The large kitchen downstairs is open to guests and can be used to cook meals, for example. And in the morning, breakfast is enjoyed in a sharing atmosphere with other hotel guests around the large communal table. The place also features a very cozy lounge/library, a music studio, and all the hotel’s common rooms are “ready to live in”. The Magic Hall is also a signatory establishment of the Eco-responsible Commitment Charter.
We stayed in room #6 on the 1st floor. There are several room themes: “Music” featuring warm decor blending wood and contemporary furniture; “Dance” unfolding cocoons of lightness and light; “Theater”, with canopy beds and chandeliers resembling grand Italian-style opera houses (we happened to be in one of these rooms); and “Cinema”, which reconnects with the atmosphere of the Magic Hall, which was a former Art House cinema before becoming a hotel.

A trendy and festive hotel in Rennes? The Mama Shelter Rennes
You know I really like Mama Shelter hotels; I actually already told you about the one in Marseille in my article about the city. The Mama Shelter group consists of 18 urban hotels across 15 cities and 9 countries. As in all of the brand’s properties, you’ll find common features across all hotels: a festive (with weekend DJ sets) and relaxed atmosphere, an on-site restaurant, and very comfortable bedding in the rooms. The Rennes property opened its doors in 2023. It features 119 rooms, a restaurant, a swimming pool, a spa, and a rooftop. We truly loved this hotel, its decor, its location—it’s honestly a great choice for a stay in Rennes!
The property is housed in the former Hôtel de la Monnaie and overlooks the famous Place des Lices, where the city market takes place. In the morning, you have breakfast in the hotel’s panoramic restaurant with a breathtaking view of the city! It’s really lovely. Not to mention the buffet itself, which, as always at Mama Shelter, is super generous. As for our room, we stayed in a medium double room under the eaves, which had a lot of charm!

A central hotel in Rennes? Hôtel Mercure Place de Bretagne
During my work week in Rennes, we stayed in this 4-star hotel located in the city center. We were initially given a classic room that overlooked Quai Lamennais. It was quiet at night, but in the morning I was woken up by road traffic. We therefore asked to change rooms and were subsequently given another classic room overlooking the inner courtyard, which was much quieter. I found the hotel clean and new, and the bedding was impeccable, as always in Mercure hotels. As for breakfast, it’s a standardized buffet, but it remains entirely decent. This makes it a perfect hotel for a business trip, for instance.
