A small collection of tips for traveling better for less

Summer being the perfect time for this, I wanted to put together an article gathering several tips gathered here and there for traveling on a budget.

Of course, these tips are not exhaustive and I encourage you to leave your own in the comments, so that everyone can benefit from them.

GuestToGuest is a website that reinvents home exchange by making it safe, flexible, and above all free (with optional paid services).

I already told you about it here, but exchanging houses or apartments is an easy and practical solution for traveling peacefully in various accommodations and cities without spending crazy amounts of money.

This site and its free offer already count 8,400 members and homes in 122 countries.

  • Gamping, camping between individuals

The term Gamping comes from Garden Camping, a kind of bed and breakfast concept for campers.

The site gamping.com was launched last April and offers an exclusive list of private land available to host campers. The site’s goal is to connect landowners and campers from around the world.

From a simple square of lawn to a large, spacious field, with or without sanitary facilities, with or without a pool/breakfast/kitchen, you will find all types of land on this site.

Prices for an adult vary from €1 up to €20 per night. On average, a host can expect to receive €20/night per couple of campers.

In short, a win-win concept, friendly and convivial, we can hope, much like bed and breakfast establishments are in a similar spirit.

  • HouseTrip for rentals from private individuals

HouseTrip is a vacation rental site, with the difference that you book your accommodation from over 180,000 private rentals.

The site offers the possibility to rent a room or the entire property from a private individual, all as easily as booking a hotel room. It is a private individual who “lends” their house or part of it, providing the comfort of a home and the booking ease of a hotel…

For example, for a rental in Paris with HouseTrip, prices start at €18/1 night. Granted, for that price it’s not the Ritz, but for broke travelers who want to discover the city, it’s a bargain!

  • Good Spot, sharing between locals and travelers

Good Spot is a new collaborative platform that conveys a concept of alternative tourism by offering a space for exchanges between locals and travelers.

If this concept interests you, watch this short video to learn more.

The good news is that right now (and until August 31st) the site is even offering a contest in the form of a Summer Quiz on its Facebook page to win 20 activities to choose from on Good Spot.

I don’t know about you, but for me, this is really the kind of mindset I love traveling in!

  • Enterprise, for cheap car rentals

Having rented a car myself some time ago for my weekend in the Yvelines, I was able to see the exorbitant price of this type of service.

The specialty of Enterprise is car rental at airports with a large network of agencies at major sites. They have a very solid customer service and according to price comparison sites, they are among the cheapest on the market.

This American-origin company is also established in many countries around the world.

  • Swopera, collaborative consumption through travel

Swopera has been offering, for almost a year now, a classified ads service of a rather special kind to encourage sharing… and travel.

The concept: allow everyone to search for rare or exotic products via the travels of other users. Mint chocolate candies from Bosnia or kiwi chips from the Maldives for example…

In short, Swopera offers social matching where travelers and lovers of good and beautiful things meet, where the local joins the global.

Thus air transport is used optimally: goods can travel on the same route rather than going through delivery services… kilometers of fuel saved that do good for the planet and our wallets! So, test it urgently.

  • Contest with the travel agency Hotelissima

And we finish with a bit of dreaming, thanks to Hotelissima, an online travel agency specialized in islands (Mauritius, Réunion, Seychelles, the Maldives, the Antilles, and French Polynesia…) and which offers smart prices by negotiating directly with hoteliers.

Right now, the site is giving away on its Facebook page (until Sunday, August 4th) a dream trip to Mauritius (7 nights for 2 people, half-board, 5* Heritage Le Telfair hotel as well as round-trip flights).

With all these tips, there is no reason to avoid traveling, because in the end, there are a large number of tips for traveling cheaper! And you, what are your travel tips?
