As you know, I really love the city of Rennes, which I’ve already told you about in a previous article with my recommendations for visiting Rennes, where you’ll find plenty of information about the city, as well as ideas for sightseeing and things to do in the city and its surroundings. In this article, as a complement, I’m sharing my selection of great food spots in Rennes and the surrounding area, which we had the opportunity to test during our stay in the city with the favorite photographer in April 2024, completed by a quick visit in June 2026 as well.
These spots often offer a chance to discover local products and regional specialties to try if you come to Brittany (you can also find my travel journals on the Pink Granite Coast or in Bénodet), such as the galette saucisse or cider, not forgetting to drink a little Plancoët, the Breton mineral water. In truth, the favorite photographer and I were truly impressed by the quality of Rennes’ gourmet addresses, which we can easily describe as a gastronomic city in our opinion!

Where to do your gourmet shopping in Rennes?
Visit the Marché des Lices
On Saturday mornings, you simply must take a stroll through the Marché des Lices. It has been held on Place des Lices for 4 centuries already. You’ll find around 250 producers, artisans, and merchants there. And by the way, it’s the 2nd largest food market in France!
The stalls I recommend:
- La Ferme du Luguen: a farm located in Ille-et-Vilaine that offers duck specialties (duck breast, foie gras, smoked duck breast roll stuffed with foie gras, terrines and jars…).
- La biscuiterie artisanale La Fabrique: to buy pastries and especially their famous Kouign Amann (15 €)!
- L’Etable Ronde: an artisanal cheese shop that makes award-winning cow’s “hay milk” cheeses.

Where to eat Asian food in Rennes? Miss Bao
Located right across from the Rennes train station, this spot offers a cozy and colorful decor. It serves Asian cuisine known as panasian food, meaning fusion cuisine that incorporates dishes, ingredients, and flavors from several Asian countries (here, mainly Japanese, Korean, and Chinese).
What we had: homemade pork and shiitake gyozas (6€); sea bass chirashi (17€); tempura shrimp bao (12€); for dessert, I strongly recommend trying the roasted pineapple on the Japanese robata, which we truly loved (7 €); for drinks, we tried the Tokai Ji Cooler mocktail (9.50€) and sake (between 11 € and 13 € per glass) as an alcoholic drink option for enthusiasts.

Where to eat Italian food in Rennes? GruppoMimo
Founded in 2021 by entrepreneurial duo Édouard Hausseguy and Benoît Bossu, this fast-growing young brand and restaurant group is the new phenomenon in trendy Italian gastronomy. Driven by their motto “Pizza, pasta e amore” and a festive identity, the brand has set up shop in Rennes in a prime location: right downstairs from the Mama Shelter hotel (which I told you about in my article on my selection of accommodations in Rennes) and facing the famous Place des Lices.
On the plate, between generously topped pizzas (we tested the Green Washing which is vegetarian – 16 €), pasta dishes, salads (like the Alain Melon with melon, Parma ham, and mozzarella – 18 €) and ultra-gourmand desserts (special mention for their famous creamy tiramisu – 9 €), the group’s promise is kept. As a sharing starter, we also had the inferno arancini trio (14 €) which was wonderfully indulgent. The setting is polished, colorful, and warm, ideal for a casual lunch after the market or a festive dinner with friends.

A tapas bar in Rennes? Território (Name change)
This cocktail and tapas bar is located not far from the Rennes train station. It offers cuisine that takes your taste buds on a journey with dishes and sharing plates in a very friendly atmosphere. We were particularly won over by the cocktails, which are very affordable and truly high quality, without failing to be original.
What we tasted: forest flammkuchen (12.50 €); tuna and sesame samosas (5 €); fried hake accras (5 €); patatas bravas and aioli (5 €); tiramisu for dessert (7 €).

Where to eat inside the Rennes train station? Le Paris-Brest by Christian Le Squer
Opened in 2019 as part of the renewal of the Rennes train station, this restaurant is conceived as a contemporary railway station buffet, giving pride of place to revisited and refined local cuisine. The setting is truly very original, since you eat in the heart of the station, in a restaurant with designer decor by architect Patrick Jouin and glass facades that allow you to watch the bustle and life of travelers hurrying or waiting around us. It constitutes a haven of tranquility and a culinary stopover in this place of transit.
The menu is signed by 3-star Chef Christian Le Squer and the restaurant works notably with Breton producers. It offers revisited Breton gastronomy. For dessert, don’t miss the famous Paris-Brest, the signature dish of the address that gives it its name. And on the beverage side, the restaurant has a very lovely wine and spirits list, and you can trust the sommelier to suggest wonderful discoveries. Indeed, this list was crafted by Eric Beaumard, runner-up for Best Sommelier of the World in 1998.

A bistronomic address in Rennes? Pierre « restaurant de copains » (Closed)
This bistronomic restaurant which opened its doors in 2019 offers extremely well-crafted seasonal cuisine. In his restaurant for friends, Pierre wanted to create a bistro where people can eat and drink well, while enjoying a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, and it is a true success. We really loved this address and I warmly recommend it to you.
What we tasted: soft-boiled egg, with small sardines and asparagus emulsion (12 €); sea bream ceviche with lime, scallion, avocado, and orange oil (15 €); Balinese-style monkfish with king prawns, vegetables, and sticky rice (27 €); crispy 7-hour lamb shoulder with green vegetables, artichokes, barigoule style, garlic puree, and Espelette pepper juice (29 €); for dessert, strawberries and burrata with a poppy seed crumble, basil, and mint (13 €).

Where to eat Québécois food in Rennes? Poutine Bros
This brand already has 4 restaurants in Rennes, Angers, Brest, and Tours. We naturally tested the one in Rennes during our visit to the Breton city. It was the very first poutinerie (a Québécois specialty, and don’t hesitate to check out my articles on Quebec if the destination interests you) in France, created in 2014. In 2024, it received the title of world’s best poutine in the International category for the third time at Poutine Week 2024, thanks to its original recipe named Jacques Cartier.
Poutines come in 3 sizes: classic (which was more than enough for us); the “heart attack” version; and “Mont Royal”. Afterwards, if you don’t feel like eating poutine, the place also offers burgers. On the drinks side, the house brews its own beer, which pairs perfectly with the meal. For dessert, we tried the Boston, a cream-filled doughnut.

A good bistro in Rennes? Les Petits Papiers
This little spot overlooking Place Saint-Germain is a bistro-bar that has been around for over 20 years. You settle into a cozy, authentic, and warm setting featuring exposed beams and bistro chairs. In the kitchen, chef Yannick serves daily-changing blackboard specials made with homemade dishes.

Where to have a drink and a bite to eat on a terrace in Rennes? Le Saint-Germain

My selection of Michelin-starred restaurants in Rennes
The city of Rennes is also a fantastic hub for Michelin-starred dining, featuring 5 one-star restaurants, 1 two-star restaurant, 2 restaurants with a green star, and several Bib Gourmands. Since I was working weekdays during our stay in Rennes, my favorite photographer took the opportunity to tour the city’s starred restaurants and test out their lunch menus, and I was sometimes able to join him. We also treated ourselves to the 2-star restaurant located on the outskirts of the city.
_
Imayoko / Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand
This restaurant is the annex to chef Julien Lemarié‘s Japanese-inspired starred establishment (IMA). In a relaxed Izakaya atmosphere (a sort of Japanese wine bar), you can enjoy a weekday lunch featuring donburi, a dish made of steamed rice topped with fish, vegetables, or meat, which changes according to the season or inspiration.

Holen (closed) / 1 Michelin star + 1 green star
This table (which I was able to try by joining my favorite photographer for lunch one day) is run by chef Tugdual Debéthune, offering refined, Nordic-inspired dishes that change with the seasons. He sources ingredients from Breton producers committed to eco-friendly practices. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and I particularly loved the starter featuring green and white asparagus. The dessert was also wonderfully original and successful.
Today’s menu: white asparagus, La Torche, with mustard cream and garden salad; pigeon and potato mousse; sorrel sorbet, almond rock candy, and yogurt emulsion.

Racines / 1 Michelin star
This Michelin-starred restaurant also holds 3 toques in the Gault & Millau guide and is run by Rennes-born chef Virginie Giboire. The restaurant’s decor is elegant and modern, while the plates burst with flavor and color. For the starter, we had white asparagus with Colonnata lardo, followed by a perfectly cooked beef hanger steak served with celeriac and mustard seeds (the dish was powerful and textured yet very subtle). Finally, to finish off, a meringue with lemon, seaweed, and sorrel, offering incredible freshness.

Maison Kervarrec / 2 Michelin stars
This wonderful spot is located in Saint-Grégoire, just north of Rennes (about 10 minutes away by car). This establishment is run by the couple Ronan and Els Kervarrec, who have built a family history around Breton gastronomy. Chef Ronan Kervarrec offers coastal cuisine inspired by his childhood memories in Brittany and Provence at his restaurant Le Saison. The establishment also offers guest rooms on site as well as a fine grocery boutique.
My favorite photographer and I were truly thrilled with our culinary experience at Maison Kervarrec. Even the lunch is an odyssey, both culinary and right into the heart of the restaurant, as we started our lunch on the terrace before going to greet the chef and his team in the kitchen. We then continued our meal indoors and enjoyed coffee and mignardises back out on the terrace.
My recommendation: if you don’t have a car and the weather is nice, I recommend doing as we did and riding your bike to the restaurant along the greenway that runs alongside the Canal de l’Ille-et-Rance (about a 30-minute bike ride).

My selection of crêperies in Rennes
Obviously, we are in Brittany, so I simply had to test and recommend a few crêperie addresses in Rennes.
_
Crêperie Armelle
This young Breton brand highlights short supply chains and quality, offering crêpes and galettes made with organic, freshly spun flours, along with a rigorous selection of regional products. My favorite photographer and I completely fell in love with this house, which modernizes the traditional galette while respecting the fundamentals: a thin, delightfully crispy buckwheat crust. A little detail on the menu that we especially appreciated: an illustration of a map of Brittany allowing you to see at a glance the exact origin of each product and the local producers the brand collaborates with!
For your information, the brand has several locations, including two in Rennes (we tried the one located at Place de Bretagne), as well as in Saint-Malo, Vannes, Pont-Aven, and there is even an address in Paris! As a great tip, if you come for lunch during the week, I recommend getting the ultra-competitive lunch set menu featuring a complete galette, a sweet crêpe, and a bowl of cider. To top it all off, the kindness of the team truly made us have a wonderful time in this retro-cozy spot.
The great discovery: a super interesting organic IPA cider from Ti-Lö (a brewery in Dinan) that we really loved!

Breizh Café Rennes
This brand, which offers “crêpes differently” and which we’ve already tried several times in Paris, opened a location in Rennes at the beginning of 2024. As in all the brand’s locations, showcasing quality products is at the heart of the restaurant’s concept. It features a combination of Breton gastronomy and Japanese gastronomy—the founder’s adopted country—centering notably around a shared ingredient: buckwheat. Don’t miss out on tasting the restaurant’s ciders either, as the establishment offers a truly fascinating variety.
We tried: Cancale oysters (€14.50 for 6 No. 3 hollow oysters); the galette of the moment, smoked salmon and white asparagus galette with green peas, organic egg, Comté cheese, and crème fraîche (€22); the specialty smoked duck breast galette with sautéed mushrooms (€16.80); for dessert we also tried the galette of the moment, lemon and yuzu cream, finger lime, pomelo, candied kumquat, and borage (€12.50).

Crêperie Bretone
This crêperie is located in a historic mansion in Rennes: the former house Odorico, a French mosaic artist from a dynasty of Italian artisans who settled in Rennes at the late 19th century. Inside the building, all the mosaics have been preserved and can be viewed if you go eat there. This spot is truly unique and well worth a sit-down meal. The crêpes are also quite decent.

Crêperie La Saint Georges
This address is well-known in Rennes because it offers gourmet and original crêpes. The decor is quite nice and atypical with multiple rooms, as if set up inside a residential building, which is rather unique. The place is indeed located in a beautiful and emblematic timber-framed house in Rennes. All the crêpes are named after celebrities (we had the Lemmen and the Prisset) and they are made with fresh products, prioritizing small producers whenever possible.
