Traditional Chinese massages at Spa Lanqi

You know how much I think it is important (nay, essential!) to take care of yourself and your body. And the more time passes (translation: the older I get), the more I realize that it is indeed vital, because unfortunately I’ve passed the age from which they say the body starts to decline… I truly don’t believe this is inevitable, but on the other hand, I think we clearly need to devote time, energy (and sometimes a bit of money, too) to try and live our best lives with our bodies.

Anyway, all this to introduce you to the wonderful Spa Lanqi, which practices traditional Chinese massage and where I’ve had the chance to test several treatments that I’ll tell you about below. What I always appreciate when I go to Spa Lanqi is the very special attention paid to my current issues and how my body is feeling overall. In fact, before each treatment, the owner of the place, Mrs. Lanqi, always comes to see us (or talks to us on the phone) to do a quick diagnosis and give some extra instructions to the masseuse, all of whom hold degrees in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s knowledge passed down from generation to generation starting with her grandfather!

All massages on the menu are performed using the TUINA technique: practised for over two thousand years, Tuina is the pillar of Chinese medicine and is based on toning the body and its functions as a whole (physical, mental, and emotional). The brand has three locations (two in Paris and one in Neuilly-sur-Seine), but as for me, I’ve often gone to the address located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, and since 2023 I’ve been going almost all the time to the new location set up in the 15th arrondissement.

Inspired by a branch of TAI JI, this massage aims to circulate internal Qi energy through acupressure points.

This treatment draws inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine to help you regain vitality, tone, and immune defenses in the spring. It takes place in two stages:

  • Release of tension: an ancestral massage to untie the body globally.
  • Work on the liver meridian: targeted stimulation of the head, back, lower back, and feet.

By rebalancing the circulation of Qi, blood storage, and the energy related to the liver and gallbladder, this treatment purifies the body of toxins while soothing emotions and muscle tension.

This treatment proved to be both dynamic and intense. The first part, featuring a fairly toning massage, immediately helps to properly relieve bodily tension. The work then continues on the head, face, and cervical spine—a step that can turn out to be quite painful if you accumulate stress in this area. Finally, the last phase focuses on the belly and internal organs: a surprising massage, not particularly pleasant when you aren’t used to it since it’s a sensitive area, but which remains very beneficial for the body.

This energizing facial treatment is offered specially at the new 15th arrondissement location of Lanqi Spa, which features 15 cabins and spans an area of 262m2. The treatment releases tension, restores radiance to the face, brightens the eye contour, reduces puffiness and dark circles, as well as double chins, and gives you a glowing complexion.

How does it work?

For this treatment, the practitioner uses several tools: The cow horn, which accelerates blood circulation, removes toxins, and brings energy / The jade roller, which was the favorite accessory of Chinese empresses. They used it as a daily routine to keep their skin young thanks to its regenerating action. The coolness of the jade closes pores as the roller moves across the facial skin to activate the lymph, which reduces puffiness, smooths, and plumps wrinkles. The cow horn also accelerates blood circulation, removes toxins, and provides energy. The treatment focuses mainly on the face, but the practitioner also massages the cervical spine, head, arms, and hands.

My experience

The results of the massage are visible very quickly on the face, which already regains its radiance by the end of the treatment. Unlike other massages at Lanqi Spa, this massage is fairly gentle and less toning than other treatments offered by the venue. Therefore, it can also be a great introduction to discovering Chinese massages if you are not familiar with them, for example.

Foot Hammam

This specific treatment for legs and feet improves blood circulation, relieves heavy legs by alternating steam baths, leg massage, and foot reflexology.

How does it work?

Comfortably seated in an armchair, you place your feet in a steam basin containing plant extracts for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the practitioner massages your upper back, scalp, arms, and hands to promote total relaxation. After the hammam, the leg massage begins, followed by foot reflexology for 40 minutes. The practitioner performs a leg massage with acupressure points along the meridian pathways to improve circulation in the legs.

The foot reflexology session consists of pressing points (meridians) to specifically alleviate digestion issues, stress, insomnia… You should know that the feet contain nearly 7,200 nerve endings, each connected to a specific organ.

My experience

The massage itself isn’t necessarily pleasant because certain points can be (very) painful under pressure, but I am convinced that deep down it did my body good, because it removes tension and boosts energy.

Beautiful Summer Treatment

This treatment does important work to support the functioning of the liver, which is often compared to the general of the army, because it is through the liver that all the body’s functions are organized. In traditional Chinese medicine, the Liver, of Yin nature, belongs to the Wood element (liver/gallbladder).

It has 5 main functions that deserve special attention to keep it healthy: stress and fatigue management, energy circulation in the body, blood circulation, maintaining the health of tendons, ligaments, and nerves, and finally, the liver also helps the stomach and spleen in their digestive function.

How does it work?

To support this general of the army in all its functions, relieve stress, and combat fatigue, the practitioner provides 30 minutes of Tuina massage to strengthen energies. For the next 30 minutes, she sets out to “work” on the liver meridian across 5 precise points (meridians that can be quite painful depending on your general state) in order to promote the detoxification of the liver accumulated during winter. By stimulating them, toxins are eliminated via the lymph, and the balance of Yin and Yang is reinforced.

My experience

I must say that the first 3 points of the liver meridians were very painful for me, and I came out of the massage exhausted. I always advise planning nothing after this type of massage and doing it rather at the end of the day if possible, so you can rest afterwards. And for this massage, that was particularly beneficial. As with most of the establishment’s other massages, during the treatment the practitioner takes care of massaging the entire body (from head to toe).

4 Seasons RENAISSANCE Treatment

This treatment helps you regain strength, energy, and relaxation by dispelling dampness from our bodies, which produces toxins and energetic disorders. Traditional Chinese medicine considers that there are 5 climates: heat, cold, dryness, dampness, and wind. For them, the most disruptive element for the body is dampness.

How does it work?

The practitioner provides 40 minutes of Tuina massage to strengthen energies, and then for 20 minutes, she works in a specific order on 10 precise meridian points, from head to toe. By stimulating them, toxins are eliminated.

My experience

I think I had accumulated a lot of tension in my body, so the massage was particularly painful on certain points (especially on the left side, strangely enough) and I felt exhausted afterwards for about 2 days. Overall, I think it did my body a lot of power, but it also gave it a lot of work, which is why I think I felt so tired afterwards.

Serene Winter Treatment

In traditional Chinese medicine, there are Five Movements linked to 5 seasons, which propose to stimulate vital energy via the meridians according to the key organs of each season for maximum tone. According to this knowledge, in winter you must strengthen the Kidney, the organ that produces energy by recharging its batteries. This treatment, launched at Lanqi Spa at the beginning of the 2018 winter, allows you to start the winter period with a body full of energy, and I think I really needed it.

How does it work?

The practitioner performs 30 minutes of Tuina massage to revitalize the whole body, strengthen energies, and stimulate the body’s immune defenses, then for 30 minutes, she works in a specific order on the 9 kidney meridian points.

My experience

Once again, I think I had accumulated a lot of tension in my body, so the massage was particularly painful on certain points (especially around the cervical area where I’ve had an issue for a little over a year now) and I felt exhausted and sore for about 2 days (but the masseuse had warned me that would be the case during the massage).

Beautiful Winter Treatment

For the first time at Lanqi, this winter 2022/2023 treatment begins with the scalp, neck, arms, and hands.

How does it work?

The session therefore begins with a cranial massage, neck massage, followed by the arms. The practitioner presses on invisible points: feng chii (the head), shang mai (cervical spine), and 3 other points for the hand. These actions will notably relieve digestion problems, stress, insomnia, and tension. This improves internal exchanges and harmonizes the whole body. Initially, the practitioner establishes a diagnosis thanks to the cranial, arm, and hand massage. She then sets about adjusting the massage, from feet to head, to treat the various areas where tensions and dysfunctions were felt during the cranial massage (diagnosis).

My experience

As always at Spa Lanqi, the practitioner ultimately adapts her massage to your body’s tensions and needs, so she will naturally dwell on blockage points and issues. As always, this was a fairly painful massage for me, but once again it did my body a lot of good.

Scalp Treatment-Harmony

This treatment offers a millennia-old protocol that reconciles yin and yang to restore the body’s balance.

How does it work?

The protocol begins with a massage of the hands and forearms that activates the acupuncture points linked to the head, neck, and face. This is followed by the cranial and neck massage. The masseuse performs varying degrees of gentle pressure on key areas to promote deep relaxation.

The benefits of this massage: fights fatigue, reduces stress and relaxes, relieves headaches, combats insomnia, rebalances energies, and improves digestion.

My experience

As every time I go for a massage at Spa Lanqi, I had accumulated tension in my body and certain acupressure points were painful, but I’m getting used to it I think… Coming out of the spa, I felt much lighter and more relaxed. And in the following days, I had some stiffness in my neck, but I think that’s due to the tensions released by the masseuse during the treatment.

Covid mandates require a mask to be worn throughout the entire massage, but honestly this in no way prevented me from relaxing or enjoying the treatment.

Chi Nei Tsang: The art of visceral massage

This treatment focuses on the belly, which carries within it the traces left by all our traumas and our most intimate secrets. Chi Nei Tsang relieves fear, neck, back, and shoulder pain.

How does it work?

The protocol begins with a 40-minute massage on the belly and stomach, and then ends with a 20-minute massage on the meridians of the arms, thighs, legs, and feet. Chi Nei Tsang, a branch of qigong, consists precisely of massaging the abdomen deeply to release negative energies. This ancestral Chinese practice helps reconnect with oneself and regulate internal conflicts by stimulating our self-healing potential.

The benefits of this massage: through gentle and deep touch, this bodywork manipulates the energy of the abdomen, which in traditional Chinese medicine is the organ of the pure and the impure, where what must be stored and rejected enters and what can create energetic blockages.

My experience

As every time I go for a massage at Spa Lanqi, I had accumulated tension in my body and certain acupressure points were painful, but I’m used to it now. I was struck by the difficulty of letting someone massage my belly, a part of the body where you feel very vulnerable when someone touches it. I was also surprised to realize that by pressing certain specific points on my foot, the practitioner managed to relax very hard and tense areas of my belly.

Price & duration: 1h – 106 € / 1h30 – 159 €

Immunity Treatment

This treatment stimulates the immune system, which can weaken in autumn and winter. The goal is to preserve and strengthen it to face external aggressions. The organ affected by dampness is the spleen. When it is weakened, it struggles to send energy upward toward the orifices. The solution is to rely on good blood circulation to boost vitality because a healthy immune system is a guarantee of good health.

How does it work?

The masseuse performs 45 minutes of tuina massage to release tension and revive energy (QI) and then 15 minutes on the spleen meridian point (feet + belly + legs + head + arms).

My experience

As every time I go for a massage at Spa Lanqi, I had accumulated tension in my body and certain acupressure points were painful, but I’m used to it now. This massage is quite tonic and even if you are tired after the massage, you then recover tone and energy with this treatment.

This custom signature massage aims to relieve body and mind by performing a deep massage on the points that hurt and therefore cause problems. A treatment that takes care of the body from head to toe and uses the Tuina method, a Chinese medicine method that has existed for over 2,000 years. A method that regenerates and invigorates the body and removes accumulated tension to rebalance internal energies, or Qi.

It is a tailor-made massage, performed with Himalayan plants over the entire body, with special “attention” paid to the areas you pointed out to the masseuse. The principle behind this technique is to tone the body and its functions as a whole (physical, mental, and emotional).

I find that this overall massage really helps rebalance the body’s energies. I felt lighter coming out and quite tired, as is often the case when I leave Lanqi Spa.

This treatment, completely tailored to your current needs, helps restore your body and emotional energy, your pep, your smile, and above all, your well-being!

Based on your voice and by discussing how you are feeling and any current issues you are facing with you, Mrs. Lanqi will establish a diagnosis by phone or face-to-face. Based on her recommendation, she will determine which custom treatment you should receive to restore a good balance and will set up the protocol with the masseuse!

This time, with this treatment, I really had a very different massage from the others I had previously experienced at Lanqi Spa. The session started with quite firm foot reflexology, followed by a long massage of the belly area and digestive organs. It’s never truly “pleasant” to be massaged in that area, but it provides incredible benefits and it’s a very important zone in Chinese medicine to ensure overall good health for the body. Afterwards, the massage ended with a fairly long portion, lying on my side, focusing between the pelvis and the cervical spine because Mrs. Lanqi had detected a blockage in my neck (which is unfortunately very common for me). As always, the massage was quite painful on a number of areas where I had some serious blockages, and you feel pretty exhausted afterwards (you might even have muscle aches in the days that follow), but afterwards the body always feels better, and that’s ultimately why I go to Lanqi Spa.
