Brunch at Claus

Claus is a chic restaurant-grocery store specializing in breakfast, offering an airy, bright, and trendy setting just a few steps from the Louvre in the 1st arrondissement of Paris.

There are actually two shops located opposite each other. The first address is more of a dining spot, and the second is a gourmet grocery store.

Our brunch club had heard the buzz about this brunch spot offering exceptional quality products in a refined atmosphere, though it might leave some brunchers still feeling hungry. So, we decided to put it to the test last week.

The grocery store on the ground floor offers a wide range of breakfast products: gourmet jams (Strawberry with fresh mint, peach with saffron…), various types of muesli, homemade cookies, carrot cake, scones…

Extra jam from Ferme fruitière du Lapin Bleu: Strawberry, Pear, Peach with Saffron.

Shelves of artisanal products: coffee, cereals, wine bottles, and Bionade sodas.

For the brunch on-site, the friendly server seated us on the first floor. A brunching friend arrived half an hour later; we had to order for her over the phone since we only had a 1.5 to 2-hour window before our table was reserved for another group.

The menu offers 4 brunch options (it is also possible to order à la carte):

  • Le Français – €14 – Hot drink, juice, croissant with jam, green tea mint yogurt
  • Le Hugo – €17 – Hot drink, juice, bread with jam, scrambled eggs with ham
  • Le Claus – €18 – Hot drink, juice, bread with jam, soft-boiled egg, Muesli
  • Le Frühstück – €21 – Hot drink, juice, bread with jam, plate of ham-cheese-salad, pear-ginger compote
  • Le Jean-Jacques Rousseau – €25 – Hot drink, juice, bread with jam, plate of smoked salmon, breakfast cupcake with red berries.

We ordered the Le Français, Le Claus, and Le Hugo brunches. The quality of the products was indeed impeccable. We also agreed that the Claus set menu was the most worthwhile. The Muesli was succulent, and it was the only set menu that was truly filling.

I was satisfied with the Le Français brunch, where I was able to swap the croissant for a soft-boiled egg. The breakfast, mixing savory and sweet, was reasonably priced at €14. I highly recommend the homemade green tea mint yogurt. The Le Hugo set menu left my brunching friend skeptical; she was still hungry when leaving Claus.

In conclusion, we had a very pleasant time and ate healthily in a cozy setting, but save it for another time if you are very hungry, if you want to take your time, or if you haven’t booked.
