The National Archaeology Days

A topic very close to my heart, the third edition of the National Archaeology Days will take place from Friday, June 22 to Sunday, June 24, 2012, at around twenty sites in the Nord-Pas de Calais region.

A cultural and scientific event, the “National Archaeology Days” aim to raise public awareness of the richness and diversity of our archaeological heritage. Through tours of excavation sites, archaeological locations, permanent collections, and exhibitions in museums or laboratories, the event offers a chance to discover the contemporary challenges of archaeological research, its disciplines, and its methods.

On the agenda for these 3 days to (re)discover our archaeological heritage:

  • exclusive tours of archaeological sites currently under excavation;

  • in monuments and museums, curators and archaeologists offer the public a presentation of collections enriched by their own field experience;

  • a variety of activities (the Asnapio park in Villeneuve d’Ascq will recreate an ancient Olympic games day for the occasion, and a gladiator workshop and athlete school will even be organized for young visitors);

  • archaeology exhibitions organized in museums and scientific culture centers.

These three days encourage a meeting between diverse audiences and the key players in archaeology. In the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, around twenty sites, some of which are hosting exceptional openings or tours, are participating in these days.

These days also offer the public the opportunity to discover the different archaeological professions to better grasp the process that connects the field, laboratory work, and the presentation of artifacts.
