Like me, you may have watched Philippe Collignon’s report on Télématin last March 14th at Deyrolle.
I had already heard of this Parisian shop for its taxidermy animals, rented out for films and commercials or simply bought by private collectors. But I had no idea about all the treasures it held!
So, I decided to go and check it out!
Taking pictures is forbidden… What a shame!!! I suggest you take a look at their website before heading there in person! You will learn that the Deyrolle store has been a fixture since 1831, that it suffered a terrible fire in 2008 (with moving photos to prove it), but like a phoenix, it has risen beautifully from its ashes!
The ground floor is occupied by the “Prince Jardinier”: you can buy seeds, books on vegetable gardens, hats (yes, I gave in!!!), aprons (well, once again, I couldn’t resist: way too beautiful!!!!), pruning shears, pots, picnic bags… in short, before even heading to the first floor, you’ve already seen so much, even though the space is quite small!
Then you finally go up to the first floor (be aware that since these are two different businesses in one location, you will have to pay for your purchases separately on each floor)… You’ll hesitate between taking a trip back to childhood with old maps of French crops, fauna, or flora, and visiting a natural history museum!!! Everything is designed for a strange and very successful staging: the book and map corner, the animal and seashell section, and the back area for insects!
Personally, I’m not a fan of taxidermy, but it feels like you’re in Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast” with Jean Marais. Plus, the “cabinet of curiosities” exhibition is so well done that you don’t even know where to look because there is just so much to see! A magnificent spider crab, strange dolls…. Is Indiana Jones here?!?
If you aren’t going there like I was to make purchases (yes, I gave in on the 1st floor too, by finally finding a beautiful book on mosses and lichens), go just for the visual treat, for both young and old alike!!!!
I will end with a quote taken from their website, which sums up this store perfectly: “The world of Deyrolle inspires dreams, curiosity, and discovery.” So, enjoy your visit!
