Today I am not taking you to the theater or a show, but to the bakery to test the best Parisian flans. Believe me, finding a good flan is quite the obstacle course. As with all things that seem simple, they always turn out to be complicated in the end……

Why care about flan? For 2 reasons: the first is that we sometimes forget traditional pastries for those from across the Channel (which I am fond of), but let’s stay French and stop neglecting the quality of a product that was once a treat for both young and old. The second is that my boss has a flan for dessert EVERY lunch, but a frozen one (he is part of the test below). So, one day we decided to find the best flan in Paris. And the idea appealed to Mademoiselle Bon Plan, which is why I find myself here. This ranking is not from best to worst, but I simply followed the order of tasting. Testing cakes, how cool is that?
Boulangerie Pichard
Located in the 15th arrondissement, this bakery is recognized as being one of the best in Paris. What surprised me when I arrived is that the flan is not with the other pastries but apart with the bread (very good bread, by the way, which I tasted).

Cathy’s review:
The top crust is well golden, and the taste of the custard is excellent even the next day. What I regret is the absence of the famous “wobble” of the custard. Its creaminess reminded me more of a crème brûlée (more compact) than a flan. Even if I didn’t find the desired aspect, this pastry remains delicious due to its taste that is neither too vanilla-forward nor too sweet, and not floury in the mouth.

Eric Kayser
I have only known this brand since December 1st of this year and am delighted with what it offers. If their flans are as good as their sandwiches, it promises to awaken my taste buds!! So, tomorrow for my snack (I’m on vacation during the Christmas holidays) I’m going to test the object of the crime.

Picard frozen
You must be surprised here, thinking that with all the good Parisian pastries, why I am so keen to try the frozen one. Well, because I am convinced that a good frozen one is better than a bad cake from a so-called bakery.
