Autumn is well underway, and I have a few shows to suggest to brighten up those evenings that are getting colder and darker as the days grow shorter.
On the program for this section: a bit of theater, a bit of dance, and a giveaway to win invitations to a concert this week, at the very end of this article.

Cry Jailolo, Indonesian contemporary dance
(by Melle Bon Plan)
During the month of November, the show Cry Jailolo is playing as part of the Arts Vivants program at the Claude Lévi-Strauss theater in the Musée du quai Branly, a place I am particularly fond of, as you know.
Tasked with highlighting the traditional dances of the Maluku Islands, the Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto worked for two years with members of the community living in the small bay of Jailolo, a highly popular scuba diving site whose ecosystem is now threatened by tourism and massive overfishing.
Watching this contemporary dance show, I really felt like I was seeing a school of fish undulating underwater. You are fascinated by these repetitive movements and the dancers’ hypnotic stomping, which eventually draws you into a trance with them.
From Friday, November 18th to Sunday, November 27th, 2017
Duration: about 1 hour
Prices: €20 (full price) / €15 (reduced price) / The ticket gives access to the permanent collections and mezzanine exhibitions on the day of the show

Fear by Stefan Zweig
(by Julie Brando)

The Austrian author is decidedly timeless; his humanistic and utopian pen, capable of capturing the slightest fragment of the human soul, is everywhere. On theater fronts, Paris displays the eternal The Royal Game, Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman, The World of Yesterday in big letters, and in cinemas, a biopic has retraced the final moments of his life in Brazil.
And today, the Théâtre Michel gives us the pleasure of adapting his dark novella Fear. A sublime story brought to life by actors of indefinable precision.
Fear is the common story of Irene, a young wife consumed by the adulterous affair she is having with a married man. In a charming reconstruction of the 30s, Irene doubts, she wavers, gets lost in her lies, and feels followed and manipulated. It is this fear of concealment, of perdition, that consumes her until a grandiose denouement that will turn her life upside down.
What power there is in this intimate staging, this small apartment where a couple suffocates, gasps for air, and retreats into an abyss of insoluble problems. What a magnificent performance, especially by the actress, who moves the audience to compassion—she plays fear with such visceral, deeply troubling intensity. We didn’t know such pain was possible on stage.

This malaise is well-known in Zweig‘s work. This writer, so popular even in his own time, who could not bear to see his old Europe sink into the barbarism of Nazism. Zweig never judged; he only observed the ideals of certain politicians who twice plunged Europe into chaos.
The loss of identity is what destroyed this traveler, who believed deeply in humanity. In this Fear, we find that of its author, who despite love and passion, could never erase the traces of a betrayal that ate away at him until the final act. Zweig infused Irene with all his tragedy, and we, in the audience, are left wanting more. Bravo!

Timeo
(by Princess Acidulée)
Alex Goude
presents his circus musical Timéo, a show for the whole family revolving around unifying values. A story full of good intentions (perhaps a little too full) featuring a young paraplegic hero whose only dream is to become an acrobat.

After a somewhat syrupy first act, the show becomes more joyful and lighter. With original, fun, and colorful choreography, this show is a synonym for good humor. Furthermore, due to the positive values it highlights, such as sharing, the acceptance of disability, and more generally the acceptance of the Other, this show will delight children (though the youngest might find the two-part show a bit long).
A special mention for the making-of the rehearsals shown on a screen at the end of the show, which displays the teamwork, mutual support, and generosity of the artists, as well as the courage and willpower of the young boy.

Marriage & Punishment
(by Cathy and Melle Bon Plan)

Cathy and I really loved this comedy by David Pharao, directed by Jean-Luc Moreau, and we really wanted to share our enthusiasm with you because, besides having a truly wonderful time, we had many fits of laughter.
On stage, we find talented actors (Daniel Russo, Laurent Gamelon, Delphine Rich, Fannie Outeiro and Zoé Nonn), impeccable direction, and the plot’s misunderstandings are coherent without being heavy-handed or feeling like you’ve seen it before. Usually, I’m quite picky about comedies, but there wasn’t a single false note here. And seeing the full theater, you can tell the audience was won over as well. A play to be seen with family or friends.
The pitch: That morning, Edouard (Daniel Russo) didn’t know that by telling the lie no one dares to tell, the biggest one, the ultimate, “THE lie,” his life would suddenly turn upside down.

The tip: Youth tickets (under 26) for €10 in 1st and 2nd categories on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays depending on availability; tickets must be purchased 1 hour before the start of the show with mandatory proof of age.
Marriage & Punishment Tuesday to Saturday at 9:00 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM Until January 8, 2017 Price: between €17 and €53 Duration: 1h40 Théâtre Hébertot 78bis Boulevard des Batignolles, 75017 Paris
