Women in prison at the Mayenne Castle Museum

Exhibition poster 'In the shadow of the walls when the castle was a prison' Mayenne.

For International Women’s Day and as part of the exhibition In the shadow of the walls, when the castle was a prison, the Mayenne Castle Museum is organizing a dual-perspective visit, featuring Fanny Bugnon, a historian and specialist in the history of women in the 19th century, and Anne-Laure Cronier, a museum cultural mediator.

From the evolution of women’s rights to portraits of female prisoners, it is the role of women in 19th-century society, as “guardians of morality,” that will be depicted during this tour.

A woman having her height measured by a man in uniform near a door.

For what crimes were women imprisoned? For how long? What was their daily life like? These are just some of the insights provided by the visit, which offers a different look at the Mayenne prison and the incarceration of women since the 19th century.

The sentences, prison registers, and judgments tell a long story about the incarceration conditions for women. Guilty of adultery, attempted abortion… these sentences rarely touched the Mayenne prison, which mainly hosted thieves, beggars, and vagrants, thus shedding light on an impoverished population, far from the image of modernity and social progress carried by the 19th century.
