Visit Chédigny, a garden village in South Touraine

Chédigny is a garden village located in the Indre-et-Loire in the Centre-Val de Loire region, not far from Loches, which I told you about in another article. It is tucked away along the Indrois river and was the first village in France to be entirely labeled as a “Jardin Remarquable” (since 2013), as well as receiving the “Fleur d’Or,” the highest distinction for floral towns and villages. It is its inhabitants (about 560 today) who have shaped it over the decades and transformed it into a lush garden where 1,200 rosebushes and over 4,000 perennial plants bloom. Incidentally, just like the “book boxes” found elsewhere, you can find “plant boxes” in the village to swap seeds, which I thought was really great!

We discovered this little corner of paradise during our first trip to the region in July 2022, then we returned in May 2026, and I especially recommend that season (in May) if you want to enjoy the roses in bloom throughout the village.

Walking around and strolling through the village (free access) is particularly pleasant, especially since pedestrians have priority in the village, and I really recommend you make at least a small stop in Chédigny if you are in the area. Also, don’t miss the town’s wash house, which is fed by the charming Orfeuil stream, as well as the town’s small church. Chédigny is also a paradise for rose lovers, and this garden village whisks you away on a botanical stroll that awakens all your senses.

Good to know: the village organizes a very popular Rose Festival on the last weekend of May.

Located on the grounds of the rectory, this communal garden brings together hundreds of rare perennial and annual plants, fruit trees, a remarkable tree, medicinal plants, and a vegetable patch featuring ancient or forgotten vegetables. The original idea of the town hall, when it recovered the garden about 15 years ago, was to recreate a curate’s garden as it would have been in the 19th century. During our walk in this small garden in 2022, we also discovered a barnyard with Géline hens and grey Touraine rabbits. Above the garden, you can also spot the “curate’s vines” planted with Chenin grapes.

Paid admission: €3 per person

In the heart of the garden village of Chédigny, this cozy address is nestled in the town’s former rectory, a building dating back to the 17th century. The terrace overlooking the curate’s garden offers a unique and soothing view. The venue serves as a restaurant and tearoom, and also offers Sunday brunch as well as guest rooms (which we didn’t have the opportunity to test, however). I recommend you try the herbal teas from La Cabane à plantes, a local brand, or the drinks from La Loère, another business in the area.

During our visit to Chédigny in 2022, we had lunch at this gourmet restaurant which has a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. The address also offers a charming small terrace covered by wisteria for sunny days, and it also functions as a B&B for information if you are looking for accommodation in the area.

In the kitchen, there is young chef Armelle Krause, who has worked with great French chefs and offers simple, refined, and colorful cuisine in her restaurant. A large portion of the flowers, aromatic herbs, and some vegetables served in the restaurant come directly from the village and the Curate’s Garden, which I just told you about above.

Thanks to the Loches Touraine Châteaux de la Loire Tourist Office for organizing these two trips and to Emilie from the AirPur Agency.

I hope that with all this I have made you want to discover Chédigny and South Touraine, and if you also have your own favorite addresses and tips for this destination, feel free to share them in the comments below!
