The International Very Short Film Festival

Banner for the 20th edition of the International Very Short Film Festival, June 1-10, 2018.The Very Short Film Festival

, is an international selection of eclectic works, with one single rule: tell a story in just 4 minutes. Not one more, not one less.

The opportunity to discover the talent of budding filmmakers, who have come from all 4 corners of the globe to captivate the audience within a short timeframe. No need to be long to deliver a powerful message or make an impression thanks to an aesthetic or a world of its own.

Come celebrate 20 years of creativity, originality, and emotion in over 20 countries and nearly 80 cities. Whether you have already been on vacation to Egypt, New Caledonia, or even Amsterdam, it will still be possible for you to attend the screening of one or more films in competition. The Festival enjoys a solid reputation on the cinematic scene thanks to its diverse perspectives and accessible nature.

And to satisfy a wide audience of curious people and film buffs, the films offered will be spread across 2 competitions (International and Women’s Voices) and 3 thematic selections (French, “trash & glam”, and family-oriented). Submitted to the view of a major professional jury, the Very Short Film Festival has nothing to envy the closed and decadent world of the Cannes Film Festival. And this year, Eric Judor will be the president of the jury!

A lost teddy bear, 10 gags recovered

Poster for the movie Le Doudou with Kad Merad and Malik Bentalha and a lost teddy bear notice. In theaters starting June 20th, Le Doudou by Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé (creators of Les Tuche), will delight fans of wacky comedies. The story, in two words: Sofiane, who works at Roissy airport, finds a notice for a lost teddy bear with a reward. A golden opportunity for the young man to make some money by setting up a little scam, which is supposed to be without consequences. Michel, who absolutely wants to find his daughter’s teddy bear, lets himself be dragged by Sofiane into a search that is more complicated than expected! Two men shaking hands in a modern hall. When a duo that has everything opposing them (Kad Merad and Malik Bentalha) sets off in pursuit of a lost object, it creates a kind of cartoonish odyssey that doesn’t hold back on the most improbable situations. The two directors, having experience in comedy, let their pens and imaginations wander a bit too far into the absurd. And yet, the Merad/Bentalha duo works and shows a certain chemistry in their performance, but they seem thrown into a joyful mess that they are trying as best they can to embrace. The intention is good: to make people laugh through excess, with a cast of genre regulars (Elie Semoun, Olivier Baroux…), but this Doudou lacks finesse and a clear point of view.Lost teddy bear scene with posters for Operation: A Teddy Bear for a Smile.Fans of Les Tuche will feel right at home in this colorful world with its frantic pace and biting humor. We laugh, and after all, isn’t that the point of a comedy? Even if Le Doudou won’t go down in film history as the comedy that revolutionized the genre, it allowed its duo of directors to have fun with all its codes. For their next attempt, we would love for them to refine the way they capture emotion and handle major issues (here, family

).

It’s imperfect, but you still have a good time!

Le Grand Rex in the stars

Le Grand Rex will host on June 18th

, in its prestige room, two monuments of space adventure, 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick, and Interstellar by Christopher Nolan.

The opportunity to rediscover Kubrick’s cult film in a restored 4K version, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. 50 years that the film inspired by a short story by Arthur C. Clarke has haunted film history and the minds of cinephiles, who still try to uncover its mysteries today. The evening offers the chance to intensely experience this unique cinematic experience in “Grand Large” format, for more emotions, sensations, and communion with the film of master Kubrick. Humanity facing its origins, its future, its immortality… The mysterious power of a monolith, an artificial intelligence named HAL, and finally, the journey of a lonely man beyond “the infinite”.

Interstellar poster, Matthew McConaughey in a space suit on a snowy landscape. Why a screening of Interstellar? Well, for the simple reason that Christopher Nolan himself worked on the remastering process of the film in close collaboration with Warner. A great admirer of Stanley Kubrick, Christopher Nolan was inspired by his idol for the creation of his own space odyssey, Interstellar.

Presented for the first time at the last Cannes Film Festival, in the presence of the director’s daughter, Katharina Kubrick, this new 70mm copy faithful to the original will allow you to relive the film in the optimal projection conditions intended by Kubrick during its release in 1968. If you have never seen it, this is the perfect time!
