The Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Inrap, with the patronage of the EDF Foundation and Bouygues Travaux Publics, are organizing the 4th edition of the National Archaeology Days, which will take place from Friday, June 7th to Sunday, June 9th, 2013, all across France.
This event is the perfect opportunity to discover archaeological sites throughout France, visit excavations in progress, see temporary exhibitions or revisit the permanent collections of museums, and learn about the latest research findings.
This year, an exhibition titled “The Object Under Study” will present, in various locations, the research and work carried out in laboratories on archaeological artifacts. Indeed, research networks are mobilizing massively for these days and are opening their laboratories, storage areas, and excavation sites.
This fourth edition honors, for one weekend, the diversity of archaeological heritage through exceptional and free initiatives: open houses at excavation sites, exhibitions, conferences, events, workshops, archaeological strolls, meetings with archaeologists…
MelleBonPlan’s little Parisian selection:
- The excavation site located in the center of the capital, on the Île de la Cité (2, rue de Lutèce), will open its doors for free to visitors on Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Archaeological Crypt of the Parvis de Notre Dame: free entry to the site on June 8th and 9th, plus 2 guided tours on both days at 3 p.m. (duration 1h30 – 25 people max.)
- École du Louvre: free lecture on the “Treasure” of the temple of Kythnos (Cyclades) by Alexandre Mazarakis Ainian, Professor of Classical Archaeology, on Friday, June 7th at 11 a.m.
- Musée du Quai Branly: free lectures “On the traces of the first settlements and populations of other worlds” on Saturday, June 8th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Petit Palais: lectures in partnership with Inrap on the subject of “Recent archaeological research in Paris” on Saturday, June 8th from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Come on, I’ll let you in on a little secret: sharing this event was really important to me, because I have done excavations myself and, at the end of the day, archaeology is my core profession…
