Les Folies Musicales Festival

From Johann Sebastian Bach to contemporary music, from vocal works for small ensembles to scores for large orchestras, from Europe to Latin America, passing through India, Les Folies Musicales offers the Parisian public a second edition with no limits. Whether it’s repertoire or original creations, classical is really not all that classical, and that is precisely the ambition and mission of this event: to vigorously shake up concert codes and customs! For my part, I went to see the latest performance of “Berlioz trip Orchestra,” which recounts the tumultuous creation of the composer’s “Symphonie fantastique” in the 19th century.

Black Legends, the musical
This show is designed as a musical retracing nearly a century of African-American music in 36 scenes: from the Cotton Club to Barack Obama’s election, passing through the pre-war era and the fight for civil rights. On stage, we find 20 singers/dancers and musicians performing cult tracks like “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” by Nina Simone, “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke, “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” by James Brown, and “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye.
A beautiful, contagious positive energy radiates from this show, which is a lovely tribute to African-American music and a hymn to love and embracing our differences.

The Rocket Man, a Tribute to Elton John
A powerful voice, extravagant costumes, and an eccentric attitude… no doubt, when Jimmy Love is on stage, you wonder if you aren’t at a concert by the real Elton John! I had the opportunity to discover him in 2023 in the “Pop Legends” concert. This is an opportunity to (re)discover the artist Elton John and his entire career through music in a spectacular show.

One Night Of Queen
This tribute show to Queen is led by the energetic Gary Mullen and his band The Works, and they are back in France in 2026. In a super engaging show, Gary Mullen truly establishes himself as the vocal and physical lookalike of Freddie Mercury, captivating the crowd with his energy and incredible voice. A great time for Queen fans! For over two hours, this live show features the best tracks from Queen such as “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Will Rock You”, “A Kind of Magic”, “Under Pressure”, “One Vision”, “Somebody to Love”, “I Want to Break Free”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”…

Tribute To Whitney Houston
Belinda Davids was in Paris on March 30, 2024, at the Salle Pleyel for an exceptional show paying tribute to the Queen of Soul, Whitney Houston, where I was lucky enough to see her. She will return on June 19, 2025, to Paris at the Casino de Paris, followed by a tour throughout France. The diva is reincarnated by the singer Belinda Davids, who is one of the only contemporary singers to possess the four-octave range necessary to perform the repertoire and greatest hits of Whitney Houston. I really loved this concert, both because of Belinda Davids’ talent and voice, but also for her showmanship. You don’t get bored for a second, and the artists’ positive energy is truly contagious.

Circus: A Simple Space

A Simple Space played to sold-out audiences at La Villette in 2023 and returns to Paris after having toured the world several times. This show by the Australian company Gravity & Other Myths features 7 extraordinary acrobats and a musician in a performance that is at once raw, intense, fragile, and playful. Intimacy is sought with the audience, and some spectators (as was our case) are on stage with the artists (it was actually my first time experiencing this kind of immersion, and I found it really great). It allows you to feel the heat, hear the breathing, be immersed in the effort, and see the technical skill of the acrobats; it is really very impressive. Here, no makeup, no sets, no staging; it is a visceral exchange that occurs between these acrobats and the audience. Everyone pushes their physical limits, and this honesty is the very essence of this company’s work: infinitely human, generous, and alive.

Molière’s The Misanthrope by Tigran Mekhitarian

Tigran Mekhitarian takes up residence at the Théâtre Antoine for a while to share his vision of The Misanthrope. Text, dance, and song intermingle for a contemporary and radical reinterpretation of Molière‘s masterpiece. Faithful to the original text, Mekhitarian propels it into a contemporary setting, where Alceste becomes a young man from a working-class neighborhood confronted with the hypocrisy of a bourgeois artistic world. The gamble was successful from my point of view; the text is almost delivered as slam poetry, and the actors are brilliant and precise in their verbal sparring. A pleasure to rediscover this classic updated with accuracy and passion.

Requiem(s) by Angelin Preljocaj
Through a succession of contrasting scenes and scores, this ballet by the famous choreographer Angelin Preljocaj traverses the complex palette of emotions caused by grief, from annihilation to hope and resilience. The ballet also visits the classical repertoire of the requiem, from Bach to Ligeti, with striking touches from the band System of a Down, of which the choreographer is visibly a fan and which intentionally destabilizes the spectator throughout the show, with a very powerful passage at the end featuring the band’s well-known track: “Chop Suey!”.

Dub

Created in 2023 and after several performances at the Théâtre de la Ville, DUB by the Amala Dianor company is energizing the 13e Art for 15 shows! With a creative and powerful energy infused by choreographer Amala Dianor, 11 performers break free from dances born in urban spaces: hip-hop, waacking, coupé-décalé, electro… The dancers gravitate around several cubes that evoke both the facades of buildings in large urban spaces and those of free party sound systems. The steps follow one another to a reggae and electro soundtrack mixed live on stage by composer and DJ Awir Leon. This show gathers youth from all corners of the world in three vivid scenes that made us want to dance in our seats.
And you can also enjoy an after-show at La 13e Heure: the new after-show venue of the 13e Art. Following the performance of DUB, Awir Leon will leave the main stage of the 13e Art to provide vibes for the public until La 13e Heure (every Friday and Saturday – from 9:30 PM to 1:00 AM).

Juliette & Roméo

Juliette & Roméo is a contemporary and urban ballet, produced by FMC and Indigo Productions, which revisits the Shakespearean myth by offering danced parts, slammed parts, and the rest of the story is evoked through video projections. The ballet’s original music is by Fabrice Aboulker. I liked the choreography of the dance scenes, but I was a little less convinced by the interludes. The show remains, however, very interesting in many aspects, and personally, I was touched by the emotion it exudes.

Amélia

This atypical show tells the life of Amélia Earhart, an aviation pioneer and activist for women’s rights. We discovered a magnificent aerial duet that truly won us over, along with the favorite photographer. The play of lights and the inventiveness of the show, which is teeming with visual trouvailles, truly captivated us. Not to mention Amélia’s story, which was a strong voice for female emancipation in the 1930s in America. This is the 2nd show by Lucie Calvet, a trained dancer and aerial artist, and on stage, we find Mylène Catroux & Marceau Ehrmann from the Pérégrin Company.

TUTU by Philippe Lafeuille

In 2014, for the company’s twentieth anniversary, the Chicos Mambo presented TUTU for the first time in Paris, a multi-faceted dance show that sets fire wherever it goes. This multidisciplinary and wacky show, which has become a cult classic, strings together humorous and poetic scenes that set the cadence. I was lucky enough to be able to see this show in 2019, 2021, and 2022, and every time I had a great time, carried away by the eccentricity of the show and its humor.

The Opera Locos
On stage, we find 5 eccentric Opera singers who offer us a unique performance by linking famous arias from the Opera “The Magic Flute” by Mozart, “Carmen” by Bizet, “The Tales of Hoffmann” by Offenbach…), mixed with a few borrowings from Pop music (Mika, Céline Dion, Beyoncé). This show is extremely funny, and this “comic Opera show” works very well.

The Silence of Sound
The Silence of Sound is a hybrid show (classical music, clown, video, and lights) for all audiences, presented for the first time in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in January 2026 after having toured in Mexico, Spain, and Germany since 2022. It was imagined by conductor and director Alondra de la Parra and clown Gabriela Muñoz, both Mexican. Both women worked for over six years on this production, which tells the story of a clown whose life is transformed when she discovers the beauty of music. I really liked the poetry of this show, even if I regret my placement on the far right of the theater, which prevented me from seeing a good part of the clown’s performance… It is, in any case, a beautiful hymn to classical music with a lot of tenderness and humor.

The Dancer[s]
![Poster for The Dancer[s] by the François Mauduit Company in December 2025.](https://mademoisellebonplan.fr/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/The-Dancers-678x1024.jpg)
The show The Dancer[S] by choreographer François Mauduit (former soloist at Béjart) arrives at the 13ème Art on December 9 and 10, 2025. For the 20th anniversary of his company, François Mauduit traces his memories of dance, from the small rat of the Opéra to the interpreter of Maurice Béjart, and many memories and testimonies mingle with the daydreams of a childhood totally devoted to dance. This ballet, created in 2022 at the Caen theater, returns in 2025 with a new production with twelve soloists from the largest international troupes on stage.
Personally, I really liked some parts of this ballet, and I was less enthusiastic—perhaps a bit lost by others—especially at the end of the show. The Dancer[s] remains, nevertheless, a very beautiful restitution of the life of a dancer, both on stage and backstage, with its joys and sorrows, and it gives us a chance to see a little more than usual: the colossal work behind every perfectly executed gesture with a grace that gives the impression of ease, which in reality is totally illusory.

L’Héritage Goldman 2

If you are a fan of Jean-Jacques Goldman like me, this show is made for you! It’s the opportunity to relive on stage the greatest songs of Jean-Jacques Goldman revisited by Erick Benzi, his historic director and arranger. On stage, beautiful voices from the new French scene interpret the unforgettable major hits of Jean-Jacques Goldman, surrounded by the original musicians and artistic team of Goldman. “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” by Céline Dion, “Il me dit que je suis belle” by Patricia Kaas, or “Aïcha” by Khaled, alongside Goldman’s classics like “L’Envie” or “Encore un matin”, and many other timeless hits by Jean-Jacques Goldman personally transported me and plunged me back into my memories of that era.

La Revue Arc-en-Ciel
This Music-Hall review is a show in 11 scenes that celebrates the life and death of Joséphine Baker 50 years ago, the 100th anniversary of her arrival in Paris, and her multiple talents as a self-taught dancer, singer, and actress. Like children, perhaps the children of the “rainbow tribe” (the 12 children of Joséphine and Jo Bouillon, adopted from all corners of the planet), the artists on stage play at reconstructing the path of this great music-hall artist. The Revue Arc-en-ciel obviously also celebrates the artist’s commitments to “France Libre” and her fervent activism against racism and antisemitism, as well as the exemplary nature of her free and avant-garde family life from the perspective of adoption and the recognition of all sexualities, in the sense that “rainbow” takes on today. A great show to dive back into the extraordinary life of this woman, who was very modern for her time.

Who Are You, Andrée Turcy?

This play, performed in a very small theater located near Montparnasse, shines a light on this essential singer of the 30s (whom I admit having personally discovered on this occasion), a great lady of realistic song, and offers a beautiful tribute to an ardent, indomitable artist and powerful troupe leader. This show was created notably for the 50th anniversary of Andrée Turcy‘s passing. It traces her journey, from her beginnings at the Eldorado in Paris to her triumphs at the Alcazar in Marseille and the Casino in Algiers. Between Parisian cabarets and legendary scenes, she traveled throughout France with her troupe, holding high the tradition of music-hall. From Félix Mayol to Francis Carco, Andrée Turcy embodies the soul of the Marseille song, between poetry, passion, and timeless success. On stage, Guillemette Lefèvre brings this artist back to life with gusto, and it allowed me to discover some songs from her repertoire and to immerse myself in the soul of an era.

L’Injuste
In this thriller, we find Elodie Navarre, who, after being acclaimed by critics for her one-woman show in the international play “Prima Facie”, returns to the stage to play opposite Jacques Weber in a closed-room setting that offers a duel between 2 intense characters.
The pitch: In 1993, in a bunker lost in a Swiss forest, François Genoud, the banker of the Nazis, lives his last hours. All his life he escaped justice and remorse. For his final stand, he receives Sirin, a young journalist from an Israeli daily newspaper. But why her? What is he looking for? This interview will be his testament for history, one last thumbing of the nose at humanity. But the young woman standing in front of him is well decided not to make François Genoud’s end of life as easy as he had imagined.

Created at the Cannes-Côte d’Azur Dance Festival in November 2023 commissioned by the Royal Opera of Versailles, it has since toured extensively in France and abroad (Asia, Europe, France, and soon in the USA) and has been a great success. Very attached to the culture of classical ballet, whose codes he revives, Thierry Malandain offers a ballet that intertwines the famous “Four Seasons” by Vivaldi with several pages from the “Four Seasons of the Year”, a little-known work by Giovanni Antonio Guido. In a setting of black petals spread across the horizon, winged beings mourn the spirit and clarity.

Brel! The Show

Olivier Laurent is a Belgian artist who brilliantly interprets the great Brel and his timeless songs in this show that we had the chance to discover at the 13ème Art in 2017. We are shaken by the resemblance of his voice and his gestures to this departed character. We think we see once again, for a moment, this great singer who marked his era (and ours, finally). Leaving this show, the favorite photographer and I had a furious desire to plunge ourselves once again into the very particular universe of this irreplaceable singer. A show that I therefore warmly recommend if you are a lover of Brel’s songs or if you want to discover a little more about his universe. He returns to Paris on Saturday, January 25, 2025, for a unique date at the Salle Pleyel!

On the program for this venue are immersive shows all year round, for the whole family, and presented in a historic venue in the heart of the 5th arrondissement (formerly the Le Brun hotel). Spectators are led by dozens of actors, singers, and dancers into extraordinary theatrical adventures of about 1 hour, from room to room, over more than 1000m2 of sets. What I particularly appreciated personally in this show are the details and the enchantment of the sets that plunge us into the magic of this Christmas tale. And at the end of the visit, there is a small tea room area to have a hot drink and take some pictures with Santa Claus for the big and little children.

A Century, Life and Death of Galia Libertad
Here is the pitch of this play that Carole Thibaut wrote custom-made for close artists: “A small group gathers around Galia Libertad (incredible Monique Brun), their friend, mother, grandmother, lover, who has invited them to “embrace them one last time”. On stage, ghosts return, meals are improvised, arguments arise, small and big stories intertwine.” Through these colorful farewells, it is the intimate and collective History of a century, the 20th century, that is told to us in the background. I had personally discovered this saga in 2022 at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris and I found it particularly moving and interesting.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company

After 7 years of absence in France, the prestigious New York company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its big comeback on stage from October 18 to 26, 2024, at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. Founded in 1958 by Mr. Alvin Ailey, this company is described as “an essential ambassador of American culture in the world.” It is particularly committed to celebrating African-American culture. During 11 performances in Paris, 32 dancers will perform on stage the mythical ballets that made the company’s reputation throughout the world, and new works, never before presented in France. Two programs will be presented alternately: program A composed of unpublished works and “Survivors” by Alvin Ailey and Mary Barnett; program B composed of works that have already met with great success (“Following the Subtle Current Upstream” by Alonzo King and “Dancing Spirit” by Ronald K. Brown).

WING CHUN
WING CHUN, the official troupe, will perform for the first time in the West, in Paris, after two years of touring in Asia. This dramatic dance show tells the story of the legendary Ip Man, that of the marriage of strength and art with the 50 artists of the Shenzen Opera and Dramatic Dance Theater. It highlights two elements of Chinese cultural heritage: Wing Chun martial arts and Xingyun Silk, from which all the costumes are made.

Jungle, Korea National Contemporary Dance Company

The Korea National Contemporary Dance Company will perform for the first time in France during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. These two evenings will take place on the stage of the 13e Art in Paris. The company’s choreographer, Kim Sungyong, will present his creation with 17 dancers: Jungle. We are plunged into the middle of a tropical forest with music composed by Japanese artist Marihiko Hara. This organic choreographic journey leads us into an intense trance with the dancers, all of whom are exceptional. Movement, a theme much appreciated by the choreographer and director of the company, is at once individual and unitary, as in the heart of a living organism with multiple components. A very beautiful moment of dance, which explores all the complexity of Korean culture.

Mourad Merzouki in residency at the 13e Art
Mourad Merzouki, the famous choreographer of hip-hop dance and contemporary dance from Lyon, returns with the Käfig Company to the 13e Art with two exceptional series of performances of Zéphyr, one of his latest creations around the wind, and Boxe Boxe Brasil, the Brazilian version of his cult play from 2010.
On one side, Zéphyr is a show created by Merzouki for the mythical Vendée Globe race, which takes 10 dancers on an ocean of imagination. With his faithful collaborators for the music (enchanting music by Armand Amar), lighting, and at the heart of a moving set, the choreographer sculpts the wind to exalt dance in a game with the untamable forces of nature. The play is powerful, organic, and hypnotic, and you let yourself be carried away by an almost mystical energy that leads the dancers and the spectators into a sublime trance. One of the most beautiful dance shows I’ve ever seen, I think…
On the other side, a revisit of an emblematic show of the Käfig company dating from 2010: Boxe Boxe Brasil. Mourad Merzouki invites the Debussy Quartet to share the stage with his hip-hop dancers to play on the contrasts and similarities between dance, boxing, and classical music, once again participating in a dynamic of meeting different aesthetics.

Tango y Tango

This show offers a dive into a vibrant milonga in Buenos Aires, where the bar and the dance floor turn into a disenchanted dream of a flamboyant Argentina. On this ballroom floor, couples challenge and seek each other to the rhythm of passion. With original music by Philippe Cohen Solal, co-founder of the Gotan Project, the dancers retrace the history of their country: its wars, its myths, the military dictatorship, and its renaissances. We find Élodie Menant, Helena Noguerra, and Rodolfo de Souza. I particularly liked the dance numbers and the virtuosity of the dancers, who made me very eager to go take a little trip to Argentina to discover all this on the spot!

West Side Story
The great classic of the West Side Story musical returns to Paris and France with a new staging by Broadway director and actor Lonny Price. What a pleasure to re-discover the mythical music of Leonard Bernstein, still as modern and inspired as ever, in this new virtuoso adaptation. The colorful and pinpoint-accurate staging elevates the choreography (originally by Jerome Robbins), and the performers are up to the task to pay tribute to them, both in singing and dancing. Finally, even if the story of West Side Story is over 60 years old, it doesn’t get old. The dramatic aspect remains moving, and this story about impossible love, racism, fear of the “other”, and integration is still relevant – which is in a way quite sad to write… In short, a must-see to discover at least once in your life!

Les Souliers Rouges
After its creation at the Folies Bergère in 2020, Les Souliers Rouges, the musical show by Marc Lavoine and Fabrice Aboulker, returns on February 9, 10 & 11, 2024, in Paris – Salle Pleyel, and then on tour throughout France. Inspired by the tale by Hans Andersen, the story of Les Souliers Rouges begins like a fairy tale. There would be a pair of ballet slippers hidden in the opera. Magic dance shoes that hold a trap: she who puts them on will know fame, but must renounce love forever. Some passages are quite interesting, the lighting design is also very well done, and the dancers are excellent, but I had trouble being carried away by the songs, which I personally found a little too simplistic and full of good intentions for my taste.

Romeo + Juliet by Matthew Bourne
This danced version of a timeless story that tells of adolescent discovery and the madness of first love, “Romeo and Juliet,” was unanimously acclaimed by critics during its first presentation in 2019. It returns in 2024 to the Théâtre du Châtelet in the New Adventures repertoire alongside the best dance and theater productions by Matthew Bourne, renowned worldwide.
My opinion: I had a bit of a hard time getting into the show at the beginning because the story drifts significantly from the original text, but little by little I was captured by the magnificent music of Prokofiev and by the modern choreography of this musical without words, whose certain dance numbers seemed very poetic to me, especially the duets between Romeo and Juliet.

CAR/MEN by Philippe Lafeuille
Directed by Philippe Lafeuille, Bizet’s work is revisited by eight dancers and a singer who, with fantasy, tenderness, and derision, play with the masculine and the feminine. A choreographic show mixing humor, theater, song, clowning, object theater, and video. This modern CAR/MEN evolves in a whirlwind of colors. An original choreography, punctuated by well-dosed humor, impertinence, and derision. I really liked this show with its communicative energy, and the scenes are quite striking. Not to mention the performers, who are also up to the level of the performance. I warmly recommend it to you.

Stomp
Stomp and its musicians of a different kind need no introduction! Since its creation in 1991, Stomp has captivated more than 15 million spectators around the world. Their secret: simple everyday objects—a broom, a sink, a lighter, trash cans—used as instruments. 8 young artists on stage make the street their playground, their outlet to express a state of mind, a lifestyle, and deliver a message.
On stage, scenes more astonishing than the next succeed each other, leading the public into a rhythmic frenzy. The troupe’s prowess comes from its complicity, each one listening to the other to perfect a note, a sound, an effect in the beauty of the whole. We have fun, we tap our feet, we snap our fingers listening to this atypical percussion. A gigantic music box that smells of tar and waste. I have already seen them several times personally (I talk about them in another “shows” article), and I never tire of them!

In a nightclub reminiscent of the Cotton Club, following the whims of an extravagant vintage radio that plays rhythm’n’blues music, the bartender and servers turn into artists. Christophe Alévêque is a “Vieux Con” (Old Jerk)
(review by Julie Brando)
Our favorite big grumbler is back on stage with a new creation, “Vieux Con,” which he performed at the Théâtre du Rond Point in March and April 2022. With the presidential news, the acerbic humorist also presented his show during two exceptional “Special Presidential” performances, in which he announced the results live. And knowing the individual, it is a safe bet that these two sessions had (we did not attend) a bitter aftertaste full of sarcasm and very cynical comments. But that’s why we love him.
With “Vieux Con,” Christophe Alévêque defends total freedom of expression, without filter, the kind that feels good where it hurts. It is to his two-year-old son that he recounts a state of the world that makes one’s blood run cold. The humorist takes a look full of insolence and provocation at an era where everyone wants to be the spokesperson for a sordid and omnipresent political correctness. Everyone gets their share: Covid, #MeToo, Zemmour, social networks, everything that makes our era an aberration where human stupidity never stops its quest for excellence. A very real “idiocracy” that takes shape in Alévêque’s words. We love this grumbling and life-saving bad faith, and we keep asking for more, because after all, young and old jerks are more than useful in these troubled times. No more smooth thoughts, and welcome to free thought, to the right to say “It was better before”!

Barbara
It’s been a little over 25 years now since the long dark-haired lady went away. But as an artist never dies, it is through the talents of today that we rediscover with joy all this musical richness that is part of our national heritage. I discovered this show in 2016 and it returns to the Théâtre de Passy for a few performances in February and March 2023.
The pitch: Music professionals and insiders know well the pianist and accordionist that is Roland Romanelli. Those who admire Barbara have met him at least once in one of her shows. This man, who accompanied the singer on stage as well as in life, tells us with much restraint, tenderness, and respect about the astonishing and amusing woman she was in everyday life. And it is his current partner, the singer Rébecca Mai, who interprets with great sincerity a score of songs that remind us how superb Barbara‘s repertoire was.
The songs interspersed with the narrations of Roland Romanelli and excerpts from interviews with the singer make it an engaging show. One feels good in this universe where the piano, the light panels, without forgetting the rocking chair, take a beautiful place in the story and in the space. Without revealing everything, the end is masterful and I even had a small tear in the corner of my eyes, that’s saying something, while Melle Bon Plan, a big fan of Barbara, was crying her eyes out! This show is a beautiful tribute to her who will forever remain among the giants of French chanson of the 20th century.

Pop Legends Concert
Pop Legends is an event for fans of The Beatles, ABBA, and Elton John, which pays tribute to these mythical artists with a show entirely dedicated to them. I was lucky enough to see them on May 2, 2022, with a concert at the Dôme de Paris Palais des Sports, which then continued throughout France. Pop Legends gathers for the first time in the same evening the artists magisterially interpreting the three greatest groups in the history of pop music, namely The Beatles, Elton John & ABBA, interpreted respectively by The Bestbeat (I personally found them truly incredible; they really succeeded in bringing back to life the soul and the sound of the group, I find), The Rocket Man (special mention to the artist’s incredible costumes), and Mania. This evening, therefore, offers 3 groups on stage for 3 hours of hits!
- The Bestbeat plays on the same instruments that The Beatles had at the time, wear the same costumes, right down to the memorable “mop-top” haircuts.
- The Rocket Man: a powerful voice, extravagant costumes, and an eccentric attitude… no doubt, when Jimmy Love is on stage, you wonder if you aren’t at a concert by the real Elton John!
- MANIA remains faithful to the slightest details of ABBA’s concerts: lyrics, sound, lighting, choreography, platform shoes, disco globe… right down to the Swedish accent.

Once Upon a Time, The Nutcracker
It was at the end of a performance of “The Nutcracker” by Rudolf Nureyev that Karl Paquette was named “Étoile” (Principal Dancer) at the Opéra national de Paris. This ballet has held a special place in his life ever since. With this show, Karl Paquette therefore wishes to transmit to a young audience the passion for dance, its magic, and its enchantment during the spring break with this new adaptation. To the famous music of Tchaikovsky, the tale of Hoffmann, revisited by Alexandre Dumas, is rendered here by Clément Hervieu-Léger of the Comédie-Française.
We were lucky enough to attend the premiere of this show on April 19 and we were enchanted by this fairytale ballet that makes you dream, as much by the quality of the sets and costumes as by the talent of its performers. A rewriting to make a more concise version while respecting the structure of the ballet and highlighting the most emblematic and well-known moments. A perfect introduction if you don’t yet know this ballet, and one that will certainly make you want to discover more!

Marie-Claude Pietragalla at the Théâtre de la Madeleine
In November and December 2022, the Théâtre de la Madeleine offers no less than 2 shows by Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Julien Derouault! The first is a solo show, “La femme qui danse“, which celebrates the more than 40 years on stage of the Opéra principal dancer, now a choreographer of her own company, the Théâtre du Corps. The second, “La Leçon“, is a masterful danced and theatrical adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s cult play by Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Julien Derouault. The opportunity to treat yourself and go discover these two shows before the end of the year.
Juliette’s opinion on La Leçon: “Every time new shows from the Théâtre du Corps company are released, I answer the call of dance. After “La Femme qui danse” last year with Marie-Claude Pietragalla alone on stage (which is still performed alternately with La Leçon), the Company is attempting a new experience around the verb “to dance”, exploring language and the body in movement with Julien Derouault as a teacher of dance, arithmetic, philology, or linguistics. From Eugène Ionesco’s theatrical play, “La Leçon” projects us into a whirlwind of madness whose dance steps transcend the spectator. Go see it absolutely if you like theater and dance!”

Smile

Smile takes place in September 1910, at an important date in the life of the legendary interpreter of Charlot, Charlie Chaplin. Inspired by real events (but highly fictional), the play by Nicolas Nebot and Dan Menasche tells the story of a romantic date in a shabby bar and its bartender who wants to do well, all from the point of view of each of the three characters. The director uses all the artifices of cinema: flashback, black and white (yes, you read that right, the play is in black and white!), and deconstructed narration. We thus discover a hybrid, inspired mix where the staging is at the service of the narration.
Charlie Chaplin is known for his films that are as funny as they are moving. Smile attempts the same approach, succeeding with a certain accuracy to find this perilous balance between humor and drama. It is, however, mostly in the latter aspect (and in its last third, when the pieces of the puzzle are recomposed) that it reveals its most beautiful moments. The show is to be discovered at the La Nouvelle Eve theater, which has a retro atmosphere (tables in front of the stage) that is in perfect harmony with the subject of the play!

The Féerie Sur Glace troupe was created in 2008 and is composed of internationally renowned skaters, as well as artists from cabarets and circuses. The troupe resides at the Accor Arena ice rink in Paris Bercy. This year, its new production “Voyage” is a Christmas journey whose story is particularly aimed at children and is a pretext for scenes featuring synchronized skating or moments of individual or couple figure skating.
The show is joyful and some skaters have a good level, even if I regretted an ensemble that was sometimes a little too amateur and approximate during certain scenes. But the overall atmosphere of the show is very sympathetic, and the troupe shows a contagious enthusiasm.

The “Wriggles” put themselves in four at the Scène Libre
(review by Julie Brando)
The men in red, Machiavellian clowns who have been singing for 20 years, are back to put a little spice on the Parisian stage. Stéphane Gourdon, Antoine Réjasse, Emmanuel Urbanet, and Fabien Marais return to us with a show mixing old hits and small updates in a great, well-crafted farce, written with accuracy, poetry, and a great sense of the formula that made them successful. Four actors/singers/pranksters who enchant our ears and our zygomatics thanks to musical skits of insolent hilarity. It’s the story of four guys, four baby-boomers who wonder what it is to be a man today, a poor guy from the “CFMR” (Confédération Française des Mecs Relous) in the era of #MeToo and its upheavals.
Everything goes: a certain presidential candidate that no one saw coming (Z?), sexual predators, sinister family secrets, global warming, drugs, social networks… Dark humor seems once again de rigueur in an era that takes itself too seriously. It’s nostalgic “franchouillarde” (French-style) music, but with a touch of modernity in some texts. They are four guys who have aged and who carry with humility a tender and dark look at the time that flies to the rhythm of their instruments, of their voices, which have broken the house down and continue to bring together some blasé baby-boomers who still want to hear the story of “Poupine and Thierry” and “Julie la petite Olive”. It is clever, well-interpreted, musically up to their reputation. To be discovered or rediscovered urgently.
