My free Parisian summer guide 2014: open-air cinema

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

Just like last year, here is the continuation of my series on free events to enjoy during the Parisian summer, featuring open-air film screenings today.

This short 3-part guide will hopefully give you all the keys to experiencing a summer full of events if you are spending some of this summer season in the capital.

Open-air cinema in Paris with a crowd watching a film in the evening.

With all these screenings, there is no reason not to have a great summer cinematographically speaking, since all these events are free, just a little reminder in case…

The Wanderlust Summer Comedy Club

This summer, every Monday, Wanderlust is hosting open-air screenings of comedies selected in partnership with Les Inrockuptibles.

It’s a chance to discover cult films, rare films, quirky films, or simply films that will make you laugh, all on the big screen, outdoors.

The BHV Marais Bedroom

The event is over, but I still wanted to share the info in case the opportunity arises again next year and just because the idea for the event was honestly really cool!

From June 30 to July 12, 2014, the Observatory at BHV Marais was transformed into a pop-up cinema, a 20-seat “Bedroom” to see or re-watch great cinema classics in a reclining position.

The concept: show up at 8:30 PM at BHV Marais, put on your pajamas (though it wasn’t mandatory!), immerse yourself in the movie’s atmosphere starting with a themed cocktail dinner, then at 9:30 PM, get into bed and discover or rediscover cult films in this extraordinary setting.

The lineup: Top Gun, The Party, Flashdance, Lost in Translation, Manhattan, The Royal Tenenbaums, Taxi Driver, The Big Lebowski, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, as well as themed Saturday nights: “thrills” atmosphere with The Shining and Jaws, or “Tarantino” night with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

20 screenings, whether in pairs or in a group… the main thing was to book or try to win your spot.

Important: you must bring your own chair for each screening, or else you’ll end up watching the movie sitting on the ground!

La Villette Open-Air Cinema

It is from Wednesday, July 23 to Sunday, August 24 2014 that you can enjoy, at nightfall, the free screenings at the largest open-air cinema in the capital!

Open-air cinema La Villette, July 23 - August 24.This open-air film festival invites you to dive back into adolescence, with a cycle of 25 evenings dedicated to this theme so dear to filmmakers.

You can choose to settle into deckchairs with blankets available for rent (€7) for the occasion, or bring your own comfortable seating.

Below is the small cinematic selection (not exhaustive) by MelleBonPlan:

  • Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson, Thursday, July 24
  • The Last Summer of La Boyita by Julia Solomonoff, Wednesday, July 30
  • Wolf Children by Ame & Yuki – Mamoru Hosoda, Friday, August 1
  • When the Cat’s Away by Cédric Klapisch, Saturday, August 9
  • Running on Empty by Sidney Lumet, Sunday, August 10
  • Somewhere by Sofia Coppola, Friday, August 15
  • Lolita by Stanley Kubrick, Sunday, August 17
  • Elephant by Gus Van Sant, Saturday, August 23
  • Fame by Alan Parker, Sunday, August 24

A very, very beautiful selection then for this open-air cinema at La Villette and films that are essential to discover for some and/or to re-watch with great pleasure for others… So I know what to do with my August evenings in Paris…
