I must admit that this cinema section, mainly due to a lack of time, had fallen a bit into oblivion… I cannot promise you that it will be regular again, but in any case, I will try to publish it a bit more often…
In this article, I won’t really be talking about film reviews (just one 3D documentary) but rather about events and creations revolving around cinema. We’ll start with some good news, as cinema is also back in action this September!

The Cinema Season Kick-off
From September 14 to 20, the cinema season kicks off everywhere in France for 7 days, with a flat rate of €4, thanks to 200,000 vouchers to be won via a contest, organized by BNP Paribas. Be careful, however, you cannot win more than 2 vouchers per person!

It’s the perfect opportunity for a film cure in dark theaters for those who might have deserted these places for several weeks, or even several months…

Like last year, UGC is offering a special operation in its theaters with the UGC Comedy Week, from August 31 to September 6, 2016.

Pro tip, the latter is completely free and if you don’t already have it, you can request it at any UGC cinema. Don’t forget to activate it online afterward to enjoy the UGC week!

Hurricane 3D at La Géode
200km/h winds, 18 cyclones, 12 countries… Andy Byatt, Cyril Barbançon, and Jacqueline Farmer teamed up with NASA and composer Yann Tiersen to bring this incredible 3D experience to the screen.

This documentary allows us to literally travel inside a hurricane, from its birth to its death. It also allows us to understand different points of view and to see, beyond the destruction it sows, the ecological rebalancing of which it is also the author.
An exciting and accessible documentary for everyone that I highly recommend! Plus, as it only lasts 40 minutes, you can easily tolerate the horrible 3D glasses (personally, as I already wear glasses, it’s often an unpleasant experience).

Next screenings on the Géode website
duration: 40 minutes
Flat rate at €7.50
Hurricane 3D exclusive large format at La Géode

A comic book about cinema: La Parole du muet

Published on April 6, 2016, the first volume of La Parole du muet, “The Giant and the Burlesque Performer”, takes us into the magical world of silent cinema. This comic book by Laurent Galandon and Frédéric Blier (illustrator) breathes love for film.
Through the eyes of Célestin, a big-hearted giant wishing to become a director, the creators invite the reader to discover the whole cinematographic world: clandestine screenings of erotic films, storytellers, the studio atmosphere, and odd jobs.
Blier‘s drawings obviously pay a lovely tribute to the style of the era, while Galandon‘s writing is polished and unpretentious. Beyond the empathy felt for the characters, it is the playful aspect (this educational dive into 1920s cinema) that makes us want to discover the second volume soon.

Hitchcock cycle at the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation
The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation (which I have already told you about on the blog in a dedicated article) offers a cycle at the end of the summer presenting the nine silent films of Alfred Hitchcock.
In the sumptuous career of Alfred Hitchcock, we often forget his first steps in the era of silent cinema in the 1920s. Yet, like his third film, The Lodger, his talent was already very present in keeping the spectator in suspense.

In this 1927 thriller, a disturbing mystery surrounds the character of a lodger… Could he be the murderer who kills young women every Tuesday in London? Between the breathless rhythm, the expressionism of the framing, and the performance of Ivor Novello (the lodger), we tell ourselves that it didn’t take Hitchcock very long before he delightedly controlled the instruments of cinema… And through this, controlled the spectator!
From August 31 to September 27, 2016, 9 silent films (restored) from the master of suspense are screened at the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation, accompanied by a live pianist.

From August 31 to September 27, 2016
regular price €6.50 / reduced (students, seniors +65 years) €5

Ciné-jam by Edgar Sekloka, Musical and poetic encounter with Charlie Chaplin’s cinema

For Chaplin lovers, it is always a joy to (re)discover his film, The Immigrant. Except that this time, we get an original experience as a bonus: a Ciné-Jam with singer Edgar Sekloka who accompanies the screening live.
Here, no music to intensify the gags; it’s a poetic interpretation of the themes that nourish the short film: the sight of the Statue of Liberty, the misery of emigration… The tone of this intimate ciné-concert which mixes different musical genres (jazz, slam, hip-hop…) is very pleasant and highly recommended!
Many Chaplin films will be accompanied throughout this cycle to the rhythm of one concert per month at Mk2 Gambetta.

from October 6, 2016 to June 1, 2017
