My guide to trendy Lisbon

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

After my little Lisbon food tour and my tips for discovering Lisbon and the Belém district, I now offer you, to wrap up this theme, a trendier guide to the city. On the agenda, a selection of great spots for going out or having a drink, as well as a selection of shopping destinations to bring back some souvenirs from the capital of Portugal. In the first part of this article, I share my little selection of great places to go for a drink in the evening or during the day, followed by the best spots for a bit of shopping.

The Pensão Amor bar in Lisbon

Opened in 2011, Pensão Amor is a former brothel located in the Lisbon district known as Cais do Sodré, whose side streets were frequented back in the day by sailors looking for a bit of alcohol and comfort. The theme of the place is actually that of an upscale 19th-century burlesque club. On the program: crimson velvet furniture, walls covered with gilded frames, mirrors, and dozens of engravings and lithographs depicting ladies in daring poses.

The decadent atmosphere is felt even in the faux trompe-l’œil ceiling, the graffiti, sexy posters, and a few rather funny, risqué decorations to be discovered in the establishment’s restrooms. There is even an erotic bookstore! The bar serves a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits, and cocktails, and regularly hosts music or burlesque shows and exhibitions. In short, it’s a place that’s out of the ordinary to grab a drink and mingle with the locals.

The Sky Bar in Lisbon

This trendy Lisbon spot is the summer terrace of the Tivoli Hotel (5 stars), occupying its rooftop. A sort of summery rooftop where it’s lovely to go and sip a gin-based cocktail (the locals’ preference) to the sound of the DJ’s relaxed vibe while admiring the superb view of the city… The place to be, in a way…

The Bombay Gin Club in Lisbon

The British gin brand Bombay Sapphire set up a pop-up bar for the first time this summer in June at the Trinity Palace, in the Chiado district of Lisbon. I was lucky enough to grab a drink there and bump into a prince… Anything is possible in Lisbon!

My tip: If you feel like discovering local tourism, focused on neighborhood businesses and highlighting the authenticity of this beautiful city, I advise you to take a look at the site Voyage à Lisbonne.

I hope that with all this, I have made you want to discover Lisbon, and if you too have your own favorite spots for going out and shopping in the Portuguese capital, don’t hesitate to share them in the comments!
