The second edition of The Shortest Day, the great participatory short film festival, returns on Friday, December 21, 2012, at the initiative of the CNC (National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image) throughout France and abroad.

The short film moves out of traditional screens and circuits to occupy public spaces with numerous initiatives throughout France and around the world, with 18 participating countries.

Everyone is free to organize their own screening to put short films in the spotlight in movie theaters, on television channels, but also in bars, restaurants, cultural centers, schools, high schools, public spaces, on the street, on the train, in stations…

In 2011, the short film festival made its mark on our calendar with 1.5 million participants and over 1,500 events nationwide for this first edition.

Like last year, short films are making a massive comeback in theaters with pre-show screenings in the UGC, MK2, and national CGR networks.

This second edition will also be marked by numerous events all over France for young audiences.

The Shortest Day can count on the support of French cinema again this year, with 17 personalities committed to The Shortest Day: Eric Garandeau (president of the CNC), Kyan Khojandi and the team from the series Bref, Agnès Varda, Nathalie Baye, Carole Bouquet, Jamel Debbouze, Xavier Beauvois, Valérie Donzelli, Léa François, Julie Gayet, Hamé, Michel Hazanavicius, Mylène Jampanoï, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Aïssa Maïga, Firmine Richard, Emilie Simon, Elsa Zylberstein…

In the Paris region:

  • the Quai Branly Museum in Paris is offering an entire afternoon (from 12 PM to 9 PM) of screenings and meetings featuring students from the Ciné-Sorbonne professional master’s program, who created films based on works from the museum. A “end of the world” program linked to the Mayan predictions is also on offer…
  • at Gare Montparnasse, travelers in transit will discover special short film events all day long.
  • at the National Dance Center, an evening of short films open to the general public. A continuous program, divided into three main themes, combining films made by renowned artists (Hans Richter, Len Lye) and younger ones recently graduated from Le Fresnoy or La Fémis (Damien Manivel, Ludivine Large Bessette), as well as by choreographic artists (Alexandre Castres, Thierry Micouin, Adrien Dantou).
  • The University Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle invites students to a screening followed by a film lover’s quiz.
  • At the Louvre Museum, filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami presents a selection of his short films.
  • in Aubervilliers, the “homino-toiles” from the Atelier Kuso—mute men in black suits, wearing bowler hats and carrying briefcases—will roam the city center bus stops. Their briefcases, featuring a touchscreen on the front, will offer a selection of animated short films, before a grand “Talents en court” evening hosted by Isabelle Giordano.
