My movie tips for the beginning of 2017

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

With the beginning of the year comes a flood of cinema deals in French movie theaters.

As I am a savvy cinephile and have made it my resolution, among others, to go to the cinema even more often in 2017 (yes, because I already try to go at least once a week), I have put together a little summary of these enticing offers that will allow you to go see films at a lower cost.

I have also included a short review of the latest Star Wars and a look at the new VR experience at La Géode.

Star Wars: Rogue One

(review by Nicolas Diolez)

French poster for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with Jyn Erso and the Death Star.

After the creative disaster that was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the new arrival in the Disney galaxy, Rogue One, remains a feature film without a soul, filled with clichéd and disembodied characters. But unlike J.J. Abrams’ film, director Gareth Edwards manages to tell a real story. In the final act, there is even an epic breath of life that Episode VII was sorely lacking… Let’s just say it’s a pleasant surprise!

Furthermore, Rogue One is designed as a standalone film, which allows the script to lean into more dramatic tones. The fate of the characters is all the more uncertain, adding tension to the narrative. In itself, this spin-off is not a great blockbuster, as it is a product of current production trends (sorely lacking in inventiveness), but it turns out to be a good Star Wars film, showcasing technical skill and undeniable vigor.

The Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation, to which I have already dedicated a full article on the blog and which I talk about regularly right here, will celebrate the cinema of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers at the end of this January: Yasujiro Ozu.

On the program, we will be able to discover or rediscover in Cine-Concert six silent films, key works from the mid-1930s by this great master of purity in classic Japanese cinema.

The VR Virtual Reality discovery tour at La Géode

(by Nicolas Diolez)

The year 2016 saw the concept of virtual reality headsets gain momentum. La Géode in La Villette decided to jump on the trend to become one of the first establishments to offer a virtual reality tour, “Géode VR“.

There are three distinct workshops lasting about 20 minutes each: one on cinema and documentary, a second about video games (Sony’s Playstation VR), and finally one that gives greater importance to real-life movement in a virtual universe (Valve’s HTC Vive headset).

This virtual reality tour is very fun and allows young and old to take their first step into a world that is still very new, but with extraordinary potential. Not to be missed!

All that remains is for me to wish you a very happy 2017 cinematic year!
