My Thai restaurants in Paris

Today on the blog, I’m sharing a small selection of Thai restaurants in Paris. This is a shortlist of places I’ve had the chance to test in the capital, as I find this cuisine truly tasty and exotic. The Parisian addresses I’m presenting below are quite different from one another. Yaai Thaï, Im Thaï Gourmet, and My Pum Pui offer a rather traditional take on Thai gastronomy with decor that inspires travel, while Moom Mam is immersed in a chicer atmosphere with, I would say, a more bistronomic Thai cuisine. Tuk Tuk Thaï offers a street food version of Thai cuisine, and finally, Thaï at Home is somewhat the capital’s Thai fast-food chain.

For information, the Thai Select label certifies the origin of Thai ingredients, the craftsmanship, and the service of restaurants offering Thai cuisine. So, if you want to be sure you are eating in a traditional Thai restaurant, you can rely on this label issued by the Thai government.

L’Échappée is an iconic Thai bistro in the Ménilmontant neighborhood, as it has been around for over 20 years. This institution is known for its authentic flavors and for its cuisine that mixes a French bistro style with Thai gastronomy.
On the menu, you’ll find traditional Thai dishes, but the address has also recently started offering a 100% vegetarian menu with a choice of 4 different starters and 5 main courses.

For example, we tasted the crispy mushroom dumplings, which were super good, and this surprising crispy green papaya salad. For the vegetarian main course, there is a mushroom crispy bao burger. As for the classic menu, we also tried the house signature dish: squid ink spaghetti sautéed with shrimp, calamari, and mussels. For my part, my favorite was the red curry vegetable and mushroom stew—a delight. For dessert, I wasn’t a huge fan of the exotic fruit soup with coconut milk, and I preferred the Thai taro flan.

La Brasserie Thaï – “Chez Thanatcha” is located in the Montmartre neighborhood, right at the top of the hill. The strong point of this place, halfway between a French brasserie and a Thai street food stall, in a refined and cozy setting, is its selection of wines and grand crus that pair perfectly with the Thai cuisine offered at the restaurant. The address was founded by Thanatcha, passionate about cooking and originally from the green region of Phichit in Thailand, and her husband Didier. Both are aware of the importance of subtle pairings between wine and food, and they have developed a wine list that does honor to Thai cuisine.

This restaurant is located on the Quai de Jemmapes facing the Canal Saint-Martin (hence its name), not far from the Place de la République. It is a family canteen with a very nice decor that offers authentic dishes from Thai street food. The products are fresh and delivered every day by a startup called Califrais, a specialist in quality ingredients. The salad, eggs, and lemons are organic, short supply chains are favored whenever possible, and the meats are of French origin. Local products like chives, Thai basil, or green papaya come directly from Thailand.

As a starter, we tasted the lemongrass soup with shrimp (8 €), the crispy chicken and shrimp dumplings with Thai chives, soy sauce, and coriander (7 €). For the main course, we had the chicken sautéed with Thai basil (15 €) and the pad thai (rice noodle wok with tamarind sauce, coriander, peanuts, and fresh soy) in the shrimp version, which was very good (15 €). For dessert, we had the classic sticky rice mango and also banana in coconut milk with sesame seeds.

This Thai restaurant is located on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. It is the ideal place for a chic and cozy dinner in an address that offers refined Thai cuisine. The setting is intimate and classy, perfect for a romantic evening. For once, we tasted 2 house mocktails and I must say that we were pleasantly surprised because they were very well crafted. To start, we took a plate with an assortment of appetizers to taste several things. Then I couldn’t resist the pad thai, which is perhaps my favorite Thai dish. We also tested a dish we didn’t know, the massaman, a shredded chicken with red curry in coconut milk, and it was really super good! For dessert, we had the traditional sticky rice, coconut milk, and mango, a sure bet.

Located in the 9th arrondissement, a stone’s throw from the Mogador theater, the Thai restaurant Moommam in Paris offers Thai gastronomy in a chic, contemporary, and designer setting. At the heart of the restaurant, the bar with its mirrored blades makes an impact, and the bottles of sake and Asian whiskeys set the tone and pair well with the recipes of Thai cuisine served in the dining room. In addition to its lunch menu and its offer of tapas and cocktails at dinner, the chef now offers a 6-course tasting menu that we went to test during a dinner with the favorite photographer (obviously, this was before the lockdown). It was an opportunity to explore the creative and refined recipes of the restaurant while letting ourselves be guided by the chef of Moom Mam.

As always in this type of menu, you are asked at the beginning of the meal if you have allergies or dietary restrictions, and then you let yourself be rocked by the sequence of dishes… In any case, we still love it on our side, to be surprised and not really know what we are going to eat. With the menu, you can also take a food and wine pairing with 2 or 3 glasses (25 € or 35 €) of wines selected from the restaurant’s list.

We went to the address located in the 14th arrondissement near Denfert Rochereau, but there is also another Yaai Thaï address on the Grands Boulevards. At Yaai Thaï, we find traditional Thai cuisine, but above all, we are completely taken away by the decoration of these restaurants! Barely inside, it feels like having traveled to Bangkok in just one stride. For our part, we went there on a weekend to test their recent brunch with Thai flavors offer. This menu is presented in the very famous Thai pinto, the workers’ lunch box, and is available on Saturdays and Sundays. We settled into the back room of the restaurant, which is quite quiet and where you can see the cooks working, because the kitchen is partially open.

Brunch menu: 1 starter of your choice, 1 main course of your choice, 1 side dish of your choice, and 1 dessert of your choice + one hot drink (coffee, tea, or hot chocolate) + one fruit juice (mango, lychee, or orange juice).

To taste: Kaï Satay (marinated chicken skewers); Goong Thod (shrimp tempura); Po Pia Thaï (vegetable and vermicelli spring rolls); Kai Takrai (crispy chicken with lemongrass); Gaeng Daeng Curry (a super good coconut milk red curry!); Khanom Mo Keng (a Thai flan).

This traditional Thai restaurant has obtained the famous Thai Select label that I told you about at the beginning of the article. It offers many Thai specialties in a setting that refers to restaurants with Chinese decoration, which are very popular and numerous in Thailand, as I understood. We met there with the favorite photographer one Saturday noon in the company of a cheerful troop of Parisian influencers. The opportunity to spend a good time but also to travel to this country that I have never visited before thanks to my taste buds!

To taste: papaya salad (we even learned how to make it); chucheekung red curry prawns; tofu and vegetables in green curry; grilled bar fillet plaradprik; crying tiger tamarind rib steak (20 €); sticky rice for dessert; taste the Singha Thai beer (5 €) which is the most consumed in Thailand!

This nice chain that owns several restaurants in Paris democratizes Thai cuisine with simple and quick formulas. There is an address not far from my work near Rue de Rivoli. I go there from time to time when I want to eat quickly with some colleagues or friends during my weekday lunch break.

To taste:

  • As a starter, I really liked the spicy lemongrass salad (8.90 €): you can take it with grilled beef, shrimp, or like me, with chicken.
  • The Pad Thaï (10 €) or traditional Thai noodles: you can take them with shrimp like me, or with beef, chicken, or in a vegetarian version.
  • We also tested (and approved) the Tom Kha coconut milk soup (7.50 €): here again, we have the choice between the version with chicken (our choice), shrimp, or vegetarian version.

This address located in the heart of Paris in the 8th arrondissement normally offers Thai street food. For our part, we tested this address in a particular context with the Thai Select label and discovered, for the occasion, extremely rare Thai dishes that are not on the restaurant’s menu in normal times. Therefore, do not rely on my photos to judge the type of dishes usually served at Tuk Tuk Thaï.

During this very particular lunch, the chef wanted to make a meal in the style of the 19th-century Thai royal feasts. Among these rare dishes, the Khao Chae or rice soaked in cold water according to the recipe of one of the king’s concubines at the time. This dish alone required 2 days of preparation; that gives you an idea of the level of this lunch!

This Thai restaurant is located in Levallois-Perret but is very easily accessible by metro via line 3. It is a very beautiful address, and you can enjoy perfectly executed traditional Thai dishes there. Moreover, the place is run by a couple of enthusiasts, Poo, who is the establishment’s chef, and Gilles, a lover of Burgundy wines with a well-stocked cellar.

During our lunch, we discovered, among other things, the importance of the quality and age of rice for Asians. Indeed, Thailand is renowned for producing some of the best rice in the world, and over there, this cereal is considered sacred. In France, we are a bit accustomed to considering that all rice is equal, whereas, like all consumable products, there are many varieties with very different qualities. We particularly tasted an exceptional rice from the brand Naga-Gold, the “Man pou” or whole red rice, which is grown in the mountains of the north of the country.

To taste on the restaurant menu: the My PumPui platter with a selection of appetizers from the menu to share (20 € for 2 people and 30 € for 3 people); Khung Mongkorn, the fresh blue lobster salad with Thai herbs (25 €); the Talay Kling, shrimp and calamari sautéed and fried with garlic and scented with Thai spices; Khung Phad Eryngii, shrimp sautéed in a wok with Asian mushrooms; for dessert, the Khao Niao Mamuang, mango accompanied by sticky rice (11.50 €).

The little extra: the restaurant inaugurated this year a new small terrace for sunny days that encroaches on parking spaces and is quite pleasant!

This new Thai bistro is located at the foot of the Bassin de la Villette, right next to the mk2 Quai de Loire cinema (it even has a door that leads directly into the cinema). It is therefore the perfect address to have a drink and eat something before or after a little movie session. You will find well-balanced cocktails with Franco-Thai influences (price between 9 € and 12 €) and tapas to share with Thai fusion flavors, very well made! As for the decor, N̂ản̂ả is a very colorful address with a warm and exotic-chic atmosphere with its rattan pendants, leather benches, lush greenery, and its play of colors and materials. I really loved the place, in any case!

To taste: the mini Thai hot dog (a nice surprise) with lemongrass pork sausage, matured cheddar, coriander, Thai chives, sriracha sauce, fried onions (8 €); the sea bream ceviche, mango, coriander, lime, chili, spring onion (11 €); satay fries (5.50 €); shrimp tempura marinated with garlic (10 €); the chocolate and black sesame lava cake (9 €); the matcha french toast, french toast style brioche, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and seasonal fruits (10 €).

This famous Thai Parisian chain has several addresses in the capital and actually opened a latest one during the lockdown in Pigalle (Street BKK Roast & Beer). I unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to test this chain yet, but during the lockdown precisely, it sent me a Hot Box to make at home their famous homemade smoked sausage with red curry, and I must say that it was a little killer, well spicy! So, I will have to test this brand very soon in one of their Parisian restaurants to check the quality (which I do not doubt, given their reputation)!
