My Favorite Mexican Restaurant Finds in Paris

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

If you have been following my blog for a while, you know how much I was touched by my trip to Mexico in 2016. I loved everything about this country and I have only one desire, and that is to go back to discover more! While waiting to be able to make this dream come true (it is a bit pricey, after all), I’ve taken up the challenge of finding spots in Paris to relive the country’s vibe and the flavors of Mexican gastronomy. This is by no means an easy task in the capital, even if “real” Mexican addresses (and not just Tex-Mex) are tending to grow more and more.

By the way, I don’t know if you know, but traditional Mexican cuisine has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2010, just like French cuisine.

La taqueria El Vecino

This taqueria, El Vecino, opened its doors within the 1K hotel and offers 100% homemade cuisine in the purest tradition of Mexican street food. On the menu, you’ll find “hechos a mano” tacos (count about €12 for 3 tacos), with fillings featuring bold flavors that smell just like Mexico, garnishing the corn tortillas made daily by the team at the Inka restaurant. There are also quesadillas (between €9 and €11 for two) and small bites to eat on the go (guacamole, pico de gallo, frijoles charros beans, salsa verde…).

The spot is located in the storefront of the 1K hotel, and tacos are enjoyed on the go, with total simplicity, indulgence, and friendliness. And to wash it all down, you can grab a draft Corona (THE Mexican beer) or the locals’ favorite drink, the Michelada, a typical Mexican cocktail made with beer (€8) that our favorite photographer tested for you (he is very adventurous for this kind of thing).

Chilam, Mexican Gastrobar

The main location of Chilam is a very small (really small) restaurant in the heart of the Marais, which captures the warmth and friendliness of Mexico well. The owners, Juan (who is Mexican) and Lucia (who is Italian), really have a sense of hospitality, and it is a real pleasure to eat in their charming establishment, first because they offer amazing culinary flavors, and also because the atmosphere is particularly friendly. As for the food, you mainly find top-tier gourmet tacos with surprising and original flavor pairings.

Things to taste:

  • As for drinks, we tested the delicious homemade Margarita (€8) and a non-alcoholic hibiscus flower drink (€4) that we liked so much in Mexico.
  • For appetizers, obviously, you can’t skip the Guacamole to share (€9.50) with black bean puree and a Mexican salad.
  • The gastro tacos made with house tortillas, prepared with organic Mexican corn (price between €5 and €12 depending on the taco).
  • The Tostada de Salpicon de Res (€7), shredded beef served on a crunchy corn tortilla with tomatoes, onions, and avocado.

And as a little anecdote, Chilam won the best taco award last year at the Festival Qué Gusto (which I talk about at the end of this article), in which I participated as a judge!

Thanks to Chilam for this wonderful invitation.

Edit of August 11, 2019: the location has now moved to Bastille and you will find my new article on this other location right here

This taco brand is a taqueria with a colorful and warm decor, inspired by traditional Mexican markets, while incorporating a contemporary Parisian touch. There are a few tables for dining in (in front of the establishment for sunny days and also in a small basement dining room), but you can also take your meals to go.

Black Beans Mexicain

This address located on Rue de Trévise in the heart of the Faubourg-Montmartre, is a family-run Mexican restaurant in the heart of the 9th arrondissement of Paris. The warm Mexican decor reminded me of my trip to Mexico, a country I adored! On the agenda for this address: guacamole, tacos (€4.20 each), quesadilla (€15.90), burrito and enchilada (€16.90). You’ll find many dishes based on black beans, which Mexicans love, such as the Charros appetizer (€13.90) that mixes beans with homemade Mexican chorizo, which is spicy and crispy. For food lovers, I recommend the enchiladas (€16.90), still made with wheat tortillas but this time stuffed with vegetables and covered in a white garlic sauce and melted cheese.

We also tasted a really good hot Mexican infusion (€4.90), but unfortunately, I didn’t catch its name. In any case, I recommend you try it if you come to visit this spot during the winter! And for dessert, we had the churros (€7.90).

Isla Calaca

This Mexican restaurant was opened in 2017 by chef Daniel Ovadía and offers many typical Mexican dishes in a rather trendy setting. I really liked the assortment of small tacos as an appetizer, which really reminded me of the ones I had tasted in Mexico.

Isla Calaca

1 Rue Ambroise Thomas, 75009 Paris

This artisan taqueria belongs to the Mexican chef Beatriz González (Coretta and Neva restaurants in Paris), and everything is homemade. Here, the corn tortillas are made from Oaxacan Mexican corn, which is nixtamalized on-site (nixtamalization is a very old Mesoamerican process by which corn grains are soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution). The corn is ground with their own mill, and the tortillas are prepared on the spot, perfectly fresh. This is important to note because they are currently the only ones in France to perform this Mexican craft. And the result is really top-tier; their tacos are certainly among the best we’ve had the opportunity to taste in Paris!

Things to taste: the tacos, of course, and they are all delicious; the sincronizada, a double corn tortilla with melted cheese, smoked chili mayonnaise, lime, black beans, and guacamole (€5.50); for appetizers, I advise you to try the guacamole and the pumpkin seed sikil pak hummus (which is quite spicy); for dessert, I recommend the churros if you like them, but especially the rice pudding with cardamom, tonka bean, and caramelized pumpkin seeds; for drinks, we really liked the hibiscus-based mocktail (€7.50).

Bocamexa

Bocamexa offers 7 locations in Paris (75002, 75004, 75005, 75006, 75011, and 75010) for you to discover their typical Mexican recipes made from fresh produce. It’s a nice canteen with a genuinely Mexican team, very reasonable prices, and simple but well-made Mexican dishes!

On the menu: burritos, tacos, quesadillas, gringas, artisanal Mexican beers, and they even have vegetarian and gluten-free recipes!

The plus: the restaurant on Rue du Faubourg Saint Denis, where we went, is the only Parisian restaurant to offer pastor, mountain pork on a spit.

Alegrias, contemporary Mexican cocina

This address, run by a charming Franco-Mexican couple, Jeanett and François, is located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. It is a contemporary Mexican cocina that offers creative and tasty cuisine and very nice cocktails. We discovered it in 2023 and returned in November 2025. I recommend the margarita or the Michelada I Rosita cocktail with beer, hibiscus infusion, Chamoy sauce, salt, and hibiscus-chili (€9), or also the experiential non-alcoholic Maya Loca cocktail with orange achiote sorbet and honey and pollen sugar (€9). I also recommend you try the house tacos, served in portions of 3, which are absolutely delicious and super original.

Things to taste: the homemade chicamole, a more responsible guacamole made with pea cream instead of avocado, and it works great (€11); the ceviche of the moment with its leche de tigre (€13 or €15); the vegan tacos (€15) with mushrooms, a mole poblano sauce, and fried onions; the Puerquito tacos (€19) with pork belly, sweet potato puree, peanut and chipotle sauce, and crunchy corn; for dessert, we tested the pan de elote, a Mexican corn cake (€11), the Christmas dessert worthy of Père Fouettard, the Krampuz (€11), made with a kind of crispy black doughnut with tonka cream, pear, and chestnut cream inside, and also the tablilla (€13), a cocoa and praline tartlet that is a total killer and that you absolutely must try!

Jajaja, the 11th arr. taqueria (CLOSED)

We spent a 100% Mexican evening in the taqueria Jajaja, located in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. We started with a small shot of Mezcal, that Mexican agave-based alcohol with a smoky taste, followed by very nice cocktails, all accompanied by guacamole and tortillas. We continued with a few tacos and quesadillas from chef Andrès Ugartechea. I especially recommend the shrimp tempura tacos and the vegetarian quesadillas with button mushrooms.
Finally, we finished this well-watered evening in a super friendly atmosphere with one last little glass of Mezcal for the road.

Things to taste: guacamole con tortilla (€7); Chilaquiles verde with tortilla chips (€11); tacos al Pastor with pork (€11 for 5 pieces) or Baja de Camaron tacos with shrimp tempura (€13 for 3 pieces); vegetarian quesadillas Hongos Salteados with button mushrooms (€11); I recommend the Mexican Mule cocktail with mezcal (€11); shot of Mezcal between €6 and €16.

Since this summer, the Californian chef Andrew Wigger has taken the helm of a food truck offering tacos in front of the Brasserie FR/AME (which I already told you about in a previous article), those Mexican specialties naturally found in the cuisine of the American West. A few tables are set up on-site for those who would like to enjoy the tacos on the go, sitting quietly.

The little extra: the chef harvests fresh vegetables from the brasserie’s garden every morning, which are used to make the tacos.

Things to taste:

  • The tacos with chicken, beef, or veggie.
  • The homemade cookies prepared every day (€2).

The great find: every Tuesday, following the Mexican tradition of “taco tuesday“, a combo meal is offered to the participant who has posted the most beautiful photo of the concept on Instagram #FrameTruck #TacoTuesday.

Chicahualco Mexican Table

Chicahualco, the Mexican Table, is the restaurant of the Mexican chef Mercedes Ahumada. In this restaurant, she wishes to share everything she learned during her childhood in her native village, Chicahualco. It is also the result of her many trips throughout Mexico. You find seasonal cuisine that is imbued with the scents of every corner of the vast Mexican territory. We didn’t really have the opportunity to test the restaurant properly with the favorite photographer, but we were at the restaurant’s opening and we had a very promising preview!

Things to taste: the molé de la casa with duck dumpling and mirabelle plums; the Mextlapique from the State of Mexico (pre-Hispanic dish based on smoked herring in a corn husk, green chilies, carrots, nopal leaves, epazote); artisanal blue corn tortillas; barbacoa; baba au tequila.

LITo Mexican Food (closed)

This small Mexican restaurant opened very recently and is located in the Batignolles neighborhood in Paris. The place presents itself more like a Mexican fast-food joint, and yet the quality of the products offered is truly there. We eat simple and traditional Mexican dishes, and with the favorite photographer, we really rediscovered some of the flavors we loved so much in Mexico!

In addition, the establishment has a very eco-friendly and ethical trend, with the use of essentially local or organic products, and it tries to limit food waste and waste production as much as possible. Finally, the icing on the cake, it’s not expensive at all and has very good value for money!

Things to taste:

  • Regarding drinks, we tasted the Pacifico Mexican beer (€5) and a kind of Agua fresca (€1.50) but I don’t remember exactly what it was…
  • To start, some nachos with guacamole (€4) is always a pleasure and works up an appetite for the rest!
  • Next, I highly recommend you try the house tacos (€4 per taco) which are truly famous.
  • I also advise you to test a Oaxaca specialty (which obviously reminded us of our time in the city in 2016), the Tlayuda, a kind of Mexican pizza; it’s really famous!
  • On the healthy side, you can accompany your tacos with a small salad (psychologically, it helps).

ACÀ Pigalle, 100% authentic taqueria

In this very nice little Mexican spot in Pigalle, everything is authentic! From the decor with colorful tiles on the walls, to the 100% Mexican cuisine prepared with fresh local products and spices sourced directly from Mexico, to the good mood of the owner and the team. In short, it is a Mexican address as I like them in Paris and which plunged me back with pleasure into my 2016 trip to Mexico (can’t wait to go back!). I went the first time during the summer of 2020 and I returned in April 2022, and it was still just as good!

Things to taste: the tacos (wheat or corn tortilla garnished), the house specialty (between €3.50 and €5.50 per taco / 3-taco combo for €10); the frozen margarita (€9) super pleasant for the summer or a small Mexican beer (€6); the guacamole with Chipotle coulis (€8) super original; the nachos Aca to share as an appetizer (€9); and for dessert, I also recommend that you share a Pastel de tres leche or a pana cotta de Cajeta (€5).

Maizal is an authentic Mexican restaurant located in Levallois that reminded us of the dishes we tasted during our trip to Mexico in 2016. We started with a small margarita revisited with Mezcal and another cocktail based on Hibiscus. To accompany all this, I recommend you taste the house’s very good guacamole. We then tested the Mexican-style soup which really tasted the same as the ones we had tasted on the spot. We also fell in love with the enchilada, a corn tortilla stuffed with shredded poultry and coated with traditional salsa verde and sour cream. And don’t miss the establishment’s specialty, the tacos, which are truly delicious. For dessert, we had a very indulgent rice pudding with caramelized pecans and lime zest.

The Festival Que Gusto

This friendly Mexican gastronomy festival in Paris is a good way to rediscover the vast gastronomy of this beautiful country even if you have never been there. The Festival Que Gusto takes place every year during the month of June, and the 2025 edition took place from June 7 to 15. Obviously, the favorite photographer and I try to attend it every year! In 2017, I had the chance to participate in the Taco Challenge to elect the best taco in Paris and to be part of the jury for this challenge.
