To avoid any misunderstanding, I want to clarify right away that I am obviously referring here to the French-style Coffee Shop, that is to say, a place that holds coffee (a drink that is still very “young,” after all) in high regard, where you can enjoy this product in various forms (espresso, cappuccino, café latte, macchiato…) and pair it with some sweet or savory treats. As always, you will find in this article a non-exhaustive selection of great coffee shops in Paris, and I encourage you, as always, to share your own tips with me in the comments.
This little excursion into the world of coffee (although generally, I talk more about tea on the blog) was an opportunity to learn a few tidbits, such as the art of espresso, which actually contains very little caffeine in the end. I even learned (or at least tried to learn) how to make pretty designs in my cappuccino, and apparently, the secret lies in the quality of the milk’s micro-foam.

Café Lactem
This Parisian coffee shop brand, created by 2 friends passionate about gastronomy, has 2 locations in Paris, one near Palais Royal and another near Montmartre. Personally, I went to the one located near Palais Royal because it’s not far from my work. You can find specialty coffees roasted in Paris, but also homemade pastries including very good cookies.
This coffee shop embodies the art of coffee, with unique creations and subtle pairings between coffees and sweet treats. You’ll also find a wide choice of gluten-free options and a variety of plant-based milks for drinks. I really like the location near the Louvre, which I have tested twice, because it has a small seating area at the back of the shop, where you can sit quietly to drink, eat, and also work (laptops allowed only on weekdays, however).

César y Georgette
The César y Georgette coffee shop tells the love story between César Vallejo, a famous Peruvian poet who came to stay at the hotel La Dépendance, and his wife Georgette. It was in February 1927 that the poet met his beloved; legend has it that he offered her a coffee on their first date. It is located precisely in the hotel La Dépendance, which now belongs to the Machefert group. In tribute to this romance, Hotel La Dépendance offers a place that, through a fusion menu of Peruvian coffees, celebrates the bond between Paris and Peru.
The establishment offers a 5-step Omakasé tasting (Coffee leaves; Coffee cascara; Cold brew; Filter v60; Coffee of choice) centered around coffee. This specialized coffee shop actually only offers Peruvian coffees in line with its theme! Finally, the place also offers tastings and classes on various coffee-related topics.

Kawa
Kawa is first and foremost a brand of committed roasters who roast their coffees in an artisanal way in a workshop in Paris. They source from small farms or cooperatives, with a coffee menu that changes throughout the year according to the seasons and harvests, and which comes from reasoned and traceable agriculture.
They also have a café/shop in Paris in the Haut-Marais where you can buy their products but also enjoy them (on-site or to take away) with a menu that offers 8 different coffees to discover as a double espresso or filter, which changes every 2 weeks. The experience is specialized but also super accessible because the enthusiasts behind the counter are eager to share their love for coffee with visiting amateurs and regulars of the house.

Brown
Located in the Marais district near Hôtel de Ville, Brown is a cocoon where you can find specialty coffees, hot chocolates, and other comforting drinks (like chai latte) as well as waffles and cookies… And everything is homemade, obviously. It’s tasty and the place is very small but very cute, and there are even a few seats to sit down on the spot.

Starbucks, the omnipresent
How can one talk about coffee shops without mentioning the global chain of coffee houses that has established itself almost everywhere in the world today. An exercise that is difficult indeed. My opinion remains mixed on Starbucks. As much as I admire the cozy and relaxed atmosphere (thanks to the big, soft leather sofas) and the craze it has managed to spark among almost all generations… I am more doubtful about the quality of the coffee served. Obviously, it’s open for debate, but even I like to go there from time to time, I admit…

Coutume Café, the Parisian origins
Here is the name that apparently launched the new wave of Parisian coffee a few years ago, with its first address on rue de Babylone. I invite you to check out my 2013 article on the location (and yes, I was still a young blog at the time).

Hanoï Corner
Hanoi Corner is the first Vietnamese coffee shop in the capital! The location in the 9th arrondissement of Paris has already been around for 7 years. At lunch, you can treat yourself to their very good Bo bun or their delicious Banh-Mi, you know, that famous Vietnamese sandwich. And then, obviously, the address’s specialty is the Vietnamese “cà phê,” sourced from sustainable and reasoned agriculture and roasted every week in Paris. We discovered the Vietnamese filter method where the coffee drips drop by drop.
To accompany all that, the place offers homemade pastries, like this coconut cookie or the pandan chiffon cake (€3.50). And my favorite of this tasting was the egg coffee (€7), an egg-based coffee that is also called “Vietnamese tiramisu” with traditional coffee, egg yolk, and condensed milk. It smells strongly of egg yolk, but I really loved this taste and I think I could go back just to eat this coffee dessert!

Pingwoo the garden coffee shop
This friendly canteen and coffee shop offers simple and hearty dishes with Asian accents (including quite a few vegetarian choices) at lunch, ideal for a balanced, quick, and affordable lunch break. The little plus of the place, which also acts as a coffee shop, is undeniably its hot latte-style drinks, where the milk foam is shaped like little cats! Absolutely adorable!
This little address on 2 floors is located on rue Saint-Lazare. You can have a quick lunch for a very reasonable price in a super cozy and leafy decor, or just come for a coffee. In short, the ideal place for a meeting between girlfriends! The team is adorable and the service is fast since it’s done when arriving at the counter. You then go to sit down with your tray. You must then clear your table after your meal, and there is a place to put your tray and waste.

Illy Caffè, the Italian-style coffee shop for connoisseurs
The illy brand, created in 1933, aims to offer the best of Italian-style espresso in Illy Caffè and espressamente illy locations. In these establishments (there are several in Paris), you can enjoy espresso in all its forms, but also some sweets related to coffee, like the wonderful tiramisu (you know my passion for this dessert) of the establishment that I highly recommend very, very much.
The shops also have many Italian products, including those from Illy obviously (and also superb merchandise) and offer quality on-site dining. In the new espressamente illy location opened at Auber in 2013, you can find the spiral chandelier of cups from previous illy Art Collections, which all bear the signature of Bob Wilson, an influential person in the international artistic panorama.

Le Petit Noir, the coffee shop of the Comptoir Général
Le Petit Noir is the perfect place to drink a very good “kawa” with freshly ground coffee beans and sit comfortably on the soft sofas in the lounges. I actually wrote a full article on the Comptoir Général, this absolutely fascinating, multifaceted place in the 10th arrondissement.

Back In Black Coffee
This coffee shop by Kb Coffee Roasters is the 2nd opened by the team in Paris, and it is located a stone’s throw from the Bastille square. These coffee specialists created this new space to offer an overall craft experience from bean to cup, and it’s a real success! We totally fell in love with the place, along with the favorite photographer! Here, they focus on exceptional origin coffees, precise roasting, and meticulous preparation methods. The coffee is prepared by the book, and the staff is super qualified (they can actually give you great information if you have questions).
At the back of the shop, you can find the roasting machine that is done on-site to control the manufacturing chain and obtain high-quality coffees. Do not hesitate to take a look if you go to the restrooms (you will pass in front of it) and also look into the open kitchen to see the cooks working. I also really appreciated the place itself, this large, super bright 200 m2 factory with a very pronounced post-industrial (and therefore trendy) atmosphere. In terms of coffee, you will be spoiled for choice, whether on the espresso bar side (€3 espresso, €4 piccolo, €5.50 latte) or the gentle methods side with V60s (€8 to €10) or Aeropress (€8).
Good to know: you can also buy your coffee in beans or ground on-site, and their homemade granola with fruit is also delicious for those who like it!

Delirio, the half-French, half-Colombian coffee shop (closed)
This brand new coffee shop and wine bar located on rue Amelot is a very friendly place that deserves to be discovered. The coffee is roasted on-site, the wine is good and organic, and everything offered to eat is homemade. The venue offers three rooms with different atmospheres, including a coworking space upstairs that has just opened its doors.
The establishment also organizes small live concerts, theme nights, and coffee tastings using different methods with the guidance of the coffee shop’s professional baristas. If you are a connoisseur, you will surely find what you are looking for; otherwise, the charming baristas of the place will introduce you to the mysteries of good, quality coffee.

My tips for having good coffee at home
To complete this little selection, I had to present you with a selection for the home of good brands offering good coffee and/or nice innovations.
Araku Coffee
This brand offers exceptional Indian coffees that come from the valley of the same name, located in eastern India. The farmer entrepreneurs who cultivate these coffees are united within this fair-trade company. The coffee is hand-grown, certified organic, and cultivated using biodynamic agriculture with no intermediary between the farm and the cup.
Pictured below: the Santulit gift set with 1 box of 200g Signature ground coffee; 1 box of 50g Grande Réserve ground coffee and 1 silver 12g measuring spoon (value €25)

Gourmesso
Gourmesso offers coffee/tea capsules compatible with Nespresso machines, cheaper than the original ones, and all fair-trade. This Berlin-based start-up has existed for 3 years and tries to bring simplicity back to coffee by offering 25 varieties of coffee capsules, all fair-trade, including two organic varieties.
_
L’Or capsules
The L’Or brand has released a range of aluminum capsules (16 varieties), which apparently better preserve the coffee’s aromas (so, worth testing!) and also allow for a 50% reduction in packaging.
The little extra: the brand also offers to recycle for free its capsules with the TerraCycle program (on the “My Account” page by clicking on the “Recycling” link).
Price: 10-capsule format at €2.99 or €3.19 / 20-capsule format at €5.79
