My top picks for tea shops in Paris

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

I am a huge tea lover and drinker, so it is only natural for me to serve up a little Parisian selection of my favorite tea shops on a silver platter (you can find my other article with my selection of tea rooms right here). My selection criteria were product quality on one hand (quality teas and blends) and, obviously, the atmosphere of the place (decoration, welcome and service, comfort, etc.). I also note that more and more specialists and enthusiasts are working in these places, and it is always a pleasure to discuss tea, its history, and the best way to taste it with them.

Kodama

This fantastic tea & infusion bar has several locations; one is set in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, on the charming Rue Tiquetonne, and the other in the 3rd, on Boulevard Beaumarchais. The establishment has been creating its own tea and infusion recipes in its laboratory at the back of the shop since 2015, thanks to the expertise of Vincent, their tea sommelier!

The recipes are 100% natural and a large portion of the teas are organic. To test at home, we picked up a black tea with spices and aromatic herbs called “Pierre Papier Ciseaux,” whose super pretty box was made in collaboration with the stationery brand (14.50 € for a 95g box). We also grabbed a small Chai Latte to go, and I have to say it was truly very good. A lovely spot where I will return to try the tea room on-site as soon as it’s possible (post-lockdown, that is).

NeoT, a tea house in Montmartre

This tea house, open since 2007 in the heart of Abbesses, is a contemporary place bridging the gap between a traditional Chinese tea house and a house of “curiositeas,” so filled it is with all sorts of trinkets and small objects. NeoT aims to be steeped in Asian culture, offering a proximity to the drink but also a world that marries the art of living, well-being, an invitation to travel, the discovery of new tastes, and authenticity…

In total, more than 200 teas are to be discovered in the shop, from the simplest to the most refined, from the most natural to the most crafted. Inside this tea house, a warm and simple ambiance emerges, and the tasting area, although very small, makes you want to sit there for hours to chat with your friends.

La Maison de Thé Georges Cannon

La Maison de Thé Georges Cannon was born in the 19th century from the tea trading company of the same name, created by the British Georges Cannon. Bought in 1950 by Les Thés de l’Éléphant, it is now Mr. Raymond Scala who is at the head of it. This “aristocrat of tea,” as he is nicknamed, remains very attached to origin teas and promotes the notion of harvests. It is often connoisseurs who flock to his shop to choose from the 500 references of high-quality origin teas and scented teas.

This tea house, located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, has existed since 2009 and offers a space for discovery and initiation related to tea, a shop, a tea room (lunch or snack around tea), a tea library, a beauty area, a tea bar (only 1.80 € per cup), and a special space to practice the Japanese tea ceremony (which I had already told you about in a previous article, by the way).

Dammann Frères

This family-owned brand already has several addresses in Paris: Place des Vosges, Bercy Village, Rue Mouffetard, and recently it just opened a new location near Place du Châtelet. Dammann Frères boutiques are always elegant and sober. The tasting counter offers tea enthusiasts the chance to discover the brand’s iconic blends or the latest arrivals.

The expertise of this house lies in its ability to find the “right producers” and rare products on all five continents to perfect the art of assembling and blending teas. Unfortunately, the brand does not yet (to my knowledge) have a tea room where you can sit and quietly drink one of their blends… But it is a safe bet for supplying yourself with teas and other infusions.

Online tea shops

I will complete this small selection with a few online shops to buy quality tea.

My Coff’Tea

My Coff’Tea specializes in 100% natural coffees, teas, and infusions and is run by Myriam Bru, an enthusiast who discovered the taste of real (loose-leaf) tea thanks to a colleague (it’s funny because I experienced a similar situation at work). The products sold on My Coff’Tea are selected for their qualities, finesse, and flavors.

For my part, I tested 3 products:

  • Jasmin Royal, a green tea flavored with Jasmine
  • Rubis, an infusion with pieces of apple, hibiscus flowers, and elderberries (which I love having in the evening before going to bed)
  • Pom’Canelle, a Pai Mu Tan white tea flavored with apple and cinnamon

Les Thés de la Pagode

Recently I discovered this organic tea brand that offers both health teas with specific benefits, as well as flavored teas or even legendary grand crus (Gyokuro green tea, Nepal white tea, Dong Ding wulong tea, etc.). Les Thés de la Pagode are mainly found in organic stores, but it is also possible to order directly online.
