Les Artizans, bistro and cakes

This friendly establishment, located not far from the Halles district in Paris on rue Montorgueil, is the result of a partnership between Mathieu Mandard (French Dessert Champion) and chef Patrick Canal (formerly of Le Bristol, Prunier, and Le Dôme).

Together, they have created a place that offers both refined and gourmet bistro cuisine and cakes. You can come to their restaurant at any time of day, for lunch or dinner, to enjoy a pastry, or to have a drink with some charcuterie; in short, it’s an ideal haunt for gourmets and foodies alike.

We went there with our favorite photographer one lunchtime, both to discover the restaurant’s bistronomic cuisine and, of course, to taste their famous cakes!

On the plates, you’ll find quality fresh produce, successful pairings, homemade dishes, and a beautiful presentation, which certainly doesn’t hurt. It’s worth noting that the dishes are served in lovely little pans, which, in addition to keeping them nice and warm (for us, since we often eat cold food because of photos, this was quite pleasant), allows you to share your dish with your table neighbors if you feel like it.

Must-try:

  • As a starter, we shared the perfect egg with mushroom duxelles and sea urchin cream (€14), and it was a delight!

Creamy velouté with a cheese crisp and fresh parsley, Diolez starter.

  • For the main course, I tried the scorpion fish fillet, with spiced carrot mousseline, lime sweet potato pebbles, and parsley emulsion (€25).

  • The favorite photographer played the “meat lover” with the plancha-grilled beef from the butcher, served with béarnaise sauce and sautéed new potatoes (€25).

Slices of grilled beef and potatoes served in a copper dish.

  • For dessert, the choice was very, very difficult, let me tell you, when they brought us the dessert platter… All desserts are €6.

Platter of assorted cakes, including a Paris-Brest and individual entremets, at Les Artizans.

Chocolate éclair with nut crumbles from an artisan.

  • So we tried the Paris-Brest (truly competitive-level!) and the house praline specialty, whose name I obviously can’t remember anymore (that’s what happens when you have a selective memory—way too selective, to the point where I remember almost nothing…).

Caramel religieuse from Les Artizans, artisanal pastry.

  • As for drinks, the establishment has a lovely selection of wines by the glass between €5.20 and €7.90.
