My favorite bubble tea spots in Paris

Articles anciensby Melle Bon Plan

Bubble tea is a drink originating from Taiwan that blends cold or hot tea with black tapioca pearls (a starch produced from cassava roots). It can also be enhanced with milk and/or fruit. Its origins date back to the 80s, and it quickly became the iconic drink of the island. Bubble tea then spread throughout Asia, and later to many European and American cities. Paris is no exception to the phenomenon, and the capital has seen many spots spring up in recent years, although the drink has been in the city for quite some time, as my first Parisian bubble tea dates back to 2012!

In this article, I therefore offer you my selection of Parisian spots to enjoy bubble tea, but you will also see that the venues preparing this drink often also offer a selection of sweet and/or savory snacks.

This little bubble tea spot is located in Montmartre, near the Abbesses metro station. Inside, there is a small seating area at the back where you can comfortably settle in to enjoy your bubble tea or a bagel if you stop by for a quick lunch break. On the menu: fruity or milk-based bubble tea, bagels, and homemade pastries!

This Taiwanese bubble tea and fruit tea brand has shops all over the world and several in Paris. In May 2024, they opened a new shop in the Asian district of the 13th arrondissement, which I went to discover at that time. The brand offers a wide selection of drinks, 100% natural and without artificial flavors. The shop also offers an exclusive mango drink that can only be found here. And honestly, I was really won over by the quality of the products in this shop. Perhaps among the best bubble teas I’ve tasted so far!

Shodai Matcha

This brand, which now has 2 locations in Paris, is at once a restaurant, a tea room, and a pastry shop, all in a Japanese atmosphere. We tested a summer version of peach and green tea bubble tea, a refreshing sparkling yuzu and matcha drink, a matcha mille-crepes cake, and finally a matcha and tapioca pearl ice cream. As a little bonus, the Bastille location offers kimonos and fans you can borrow for free to eat “dressed up” in the Japanese style. Regarding bubble tea, the brand specializes in matcha drinks, so I advise you to taste their matcha latte, but for the summer period, they also offer fruitier drinks that are perfect for summer.

To taste: the sparkling yuzu matcha drink with matcha whisked with a chasen (7.20 €); brown sugar bubble sundae ice creams (6.80 €); mille-crepes cakes (between 7.20 € and 7.50 €); matcha or black tea bubble teas (between 6 € and 7.50 €).

Tea ke your time

This little spot located near République offers bubble tea but also a few hot savory dishes and colorful cakes (mille-crepes, cheesecakes, mochis…). The place is very cozy and has an upper floor where you can sit down to eat. For the summer season, there are a few tables set up in front of the restaurant. As a savory dish, the establishment offers chicken gyozas or khanpunggi, a Korean dish with fried chicken. Regarding bubble tea, I really liked the black sesame one and the lemon and coriander tea which was super refreshing. We also tested a seasonal summer watermelon smoothie, which was really good. And a positive point to note, all the dairy drinks at this location can be prepared with plant-based milks.

The Taiwanese tea house Cha Dao (closed)

Entering Cha Dao is like finding yourself in a Taiwanese cottage with that typically “kawaii” atmosphere (which means cute in Japanese). In this small, neat tea room, the graceful waitress welcomes you with a smile and politeness to have tea with a small snack or lunch to taste the popular cuisine of Taiwan. Vital information: bubble teas are actually a Taiwanese specialty! The varied and original tea drink menu transported us to Asia: from chrysanthemum tea to kumquat green tea, and even cafe au lait tea with tapioca, we had trouble deciding!

We ordered the Cha menu which consists of a hearty main dish, two small side plates, and a tea specialty for 13.5 €. My dish was a 3-cup chicken, a chicken with caramel sauce scented with basil, accompanied by rice noodles and vegetables. My two small plates contained tomatoes cooked with an omelet and cabbage with bacon bits. The appetizers / snacks were also delicious and original (called “Small dishes” on the menu): stuffed omelet, pig ears in salad… In conclusion, we felt comfortable in this little house that prepared good little dishes that warmed our stomachs!
