My best Parisian addresses for ice cream

by Melle Bon Plan
Published: Updated:

To make the most of the last few sunny days (yes, given the mixed summer we’ve had, I think the bright star in the sky granted us a special exemption for September), it’s time to share my latest selection of great Parisian addresses to enjoy some delicious ice cream during the summer season, but also all year round! No discrimination here, I’ve tested ice creams, sorbets, and other frozen desserts for you (yes, yes, it was a tough job, I admit!).

A bit of history: the Chinese were the first to succeed in preparing ice cream using snow. They passed their secrets on to the Persians and the Arabs, who introduced them to the Italians. The latter brought them into the French royal court via Catherine de’ Medici.

Dalloyau ice creams

For this summer, Dalloyau has launched a new frozen collection called “So Cool“. On the menu, ice creams and sorbets with 13 new flavors (€16 for a half-liter).

Flavors to try: a huge favorite of mine is the salted caramel (it’s divine, even though that’s not usually my favorite flavor), the strawberry Mojito, a delight of freshness you absolutely must discover, and finally the Caribbean (pineapple, mango, and lime), a lovely summer twist.

Another very indulgent frozen novelty, the Finger Ice, available in 3 flavors (€6 each). For my part, I loved the peanut and vanilla one, and the white chocolate, strawberry, and coconut one. All these products are of excellent quality and prepared with top-notch ingredients, which explains their price being slightly higher than elsewhere.

Grom, Gelato like in the old days

This brand, hailing from Italy, and more specifically from Turin, offers 100% natural ice cream prepared with organic seasonal fruit and high-quality ingredients. The brand even owns its own organic farm in Italy. The result is tasty, and these Italian-style ice creams are excellent! There are several locations in Paris, but I’ve indicated the one I visited, near the Panthéon, to discover these ice creams.

Une Glace à Paris

To be honest, I won’t beat around the bush: I think the best ice cream I’ve ever eaten in my life is from Une Glace à Paris! For the record, this ice cream paradise was founded by Emmanuel Ryon (Best Craftsman of France – Glacier 2000 and World Pastry Champion) and Olivier Ménard (skilled pastry chef who worked at Pierre Hermé, Harrods in London, and the Holder group), both true enthusiasts, with the goal of creating very high-quality ice cream. A goal totally achieved, in my opinion!

Here, you’ll find classic flavors made with exceptional products, but also original and very successful combinations. Besides the incredible, almost “rediscovered” taste of the ice cream, it’s perhaps the texture of the products that won over my favorite photographer and myself. For the super greedy, the shop also offers frozen pastries that we didn’t get to taste, but that caught our eye…

Flavors to try: Rum Baba (you’d think you were eating the real dessert, it’s crazy!), pistachio (again, nothing like what we usually eat), vanilla (the best vanilla ice cream I have ever tasted, for sure), smoked wood chocolate, morello cherry, fig, carrot-orange and ginger, blackberry and jasmine tea, red bell pepper… well actually everything is good, you would need to taste everything, as you will have understood!

The extra touch: a small tea room is set up at the back of the shop with a few tables to quietly enjoy the house delicacies.

Tea room prices: individual pastry at €12.20 / one scoop of ice cream: €4.20

Une Glace à Paris 15 rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie, 75004 Paris Open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 11:30 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm

Jonjon’s Cocobar (closed)

Well, I’ll finish with an address that doesn’t offer ice cream, but super refreshing products, so it’s also ideal for the summer season. This little all-pink corner, located right next to the Sentier metro station in the trendy Montorgueil neighborhood, is the first take-away from the Jonjon’s Coconuts brand, which, as the name suggests, offers pasteurized coconut water served in real coconuts! I highly recommend you test the cocoshakes (coconut-based smoothies) which are prepared to order. We tested the Coco Pink Suits You (with raspberries, strawberries, agave syrup, lime, and ginger essence) and the Coco Green Matcha.

Jonjon's Cocobar 99, rue Réaumur 75002 Paris Open from 9 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday Prices: original cocoshakes €7 medium and €9 large / signature cocoshakes €8 medium and €10 large
