My selection of brunches in the 9th arrondissement of Paris

For several months, I had been wanting to try Privé de Dessert, a new restaurant opened in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, which invites you to rewrite the rules of dining by turning sweet items into savory dishes. I was therefore delighted to receive an invitation to discover their brunch. It is in the Pigalle neighborhood, where new trends rub shoulders with tradition, that Séphora Nahon, a pastry chef by training, set up her restaurant. The concept of the place is to challenge your visual references by serving only dishes that look exactly like desserts, even though they are strictly savory. You can enjoy classic French gastronomy dishes reimagined as desserts. In the kitchen, it is Chef François Cresp who crafts the dishes offered on the menu.

On the plates: inventive and generous French cuisine, inspired by new flavors, based on fresh, seasonal products, and of course, all “homemade”.

Examples of dishes:

  • the poached tomato ‘religieuse’ with basil and mozzarella cream
  • the Celery pancake, sea bream tartare, Granny Smith apple
  • the Prawn Paris-Brest, fresh vegetables, coconut-lemongrass emulsion
  • the homemade duck foie gras canelé with gingerbread, passion fruit coulis, and coffee
  • the Saint Honoré Burger our way, with onion confit chantilly
  • the lemon tart with Scottish salmon, snow peas, carrots, and tangy sabayon
  • the truffle Boccolotti crumble, cream, Parmesan…

The brunch, served every Sunday, is made up of fresh, homemade products, both sweet and savory, to satisfy everyone, and you can truly choose à la carte. Each brunch is served with unlimited hot drinks, a freshly squeezed fruit juice, bread, and jams. I really loved the way you choose your brunch elements; it’s fun and friendly—you tick the items of your choice on a paper that you then hand to the waitress.

2 set menus to choose from: the brunch with 3 items for €21 and the brunch with 5 items for €28 (count €6 for any additional item).

Hearty brunch in Paris 9th: eggs, orange juice, tea, quinoa, and churros.

Must-try: savory churros, fluffy waffles, scrambled eggs, pancakes, French toast.

One feels a little frustrated to stop there, and above all, it makes you want to come back to discover their lunch or dinner menu…

La 7ème Côte is a steakhouse located on Rue des Martyrs. François Di Giugno and Imina Nial, whose BANG! restaurant I had already tested and loved, opened a new venue in the heart of rue des Martyrs in the summer of 2014: La 7ème Côte, a concept store dedicated to meat. This new address is, in fact, the transformation of the Café Ludwig that I had also already mentioned in a previous article.

This great address for “meat-lovers” is a multifaceted place for meeting, discovery, and sharing around meat (the house’s passion) with three spaces:

  • a restaurant offering meats sourced from the best butchers (Hugo Desnoyer, Carnarles Boucheries Nivernaise, and Carré Bio).
  • a micro-shop / bookstore / delicatessen, entirely dedicated to meat, with books and specialized magazines like Beef Mag, as well as utensils, decor items, t-shirts, unusual and fun gadgets, spices, numerous condiments, sauces, accompaniments, and charcuterie from great houses such as Mas, Laborie et cie, or the Maison Conquet.
  • A Beef Box (monthly subscription for €37) and Burger Box (monthly subscription for €27) service created to extend the culinary and carnivorous universe of La 7ème Côte. Delivered to your home, they can also be picked up on-site. These boxes are composed of two beautiful cuts of meat (or, for those choosing the burger version, the best minced beef and its buns), along with their accompaniments, spices, and condiments, revolving around a different theme each month, plus a recipe and cards to help prepare the products.

In terms of ambiance, the venue has kept the cozy decor of the Art and Craft-inspired room (a William Morris wallpaper with warm and luminous colors and tulip lamps) with its 44 seats. The restaurant’s idea is to offer tasting of quality meat breeds like Rouges des prés, Blondes d’Aquitaine, Aubrac, and Limousine, but also rarer meats such as Galician beef, Wagyu, or milk-fed Limousin veal, or more atypical options like bison, kangaroo, or zebra! These meats are available as steaks, skirt steak, hanger steak, spider steak, pear steak, merlan, flet, as well as sirloin, entrecôte, and rib steak.

The little extra: François and Imina mature and refine their own meats. You can even admire their meat-aging cabinet, which serves the meat we are about to eat, in the heart of the restaurant.

For my part, it is the Sunday brunch that I tested during my visit, and I found it pleasant and hearty. It consists of an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, with sweet items and cheeses, to which a dish of your choice is added (choice of 4 dishes during my visit). A small piece of advice, however, for true meat lovers: I sincerely think they should come to test the place at another time, because during brunch, you obviously cannot discover the full variety and selection of meats offered under normal circumstances…

The great spot for summer: the lovely terrace overlooking Rue des Martyrs, one of the most commercial and dynamic thoroughfares of our beautiful capital, will quickly fill up with the return of spring.
