I recently went to test a brand-new spot that opened at the beginning of the year in the heart of the rue des Martyrs, an urban street well-known for its excellent food shops.
I really liked the somewhat bohemian and cozy atmosphere of the place, which made me feel like I was sitting in a Viennese café, a bit out of time.
The decor, with an Arts and Crafts inspiration featuring warm and bright William Morris wallpaper, tulip lamps, old books, and Romantic-era paintings, gives the café a vintage and warm feel.
Opened by François Di Guigno and Imina Nial in January 2014, Café Ludwig is on its way to becoming one of the essential spots on rue des Martyrs.
Moreover, its terrace, which can accommodate 20 guests, offers a unique view of the bustling activity of this street, which has become the gourmet soul of Paris (a spot to note in your diaries for when the sunny days return!).
It was therefore with great pleasure that I discovered the brunch at Café Ludwig on a sunny Sunday in February.
The pros: seasonal cuisine made with fresh, local products and, above all, “homemade” – a detail that is paramount in my eyes, and on the plate, it really makes a difference!
The pastry is entrusted to pastry chef Hubert, who worked for years at the famous Gérard Seurre bakery on rue des Martyrs before it was taken over by pastry chef Sébastien Gaudard.
In conclusion, a quality brunch, gourmet, with good, well-prepared products, a real fresh-squeezed orange juice (essential for a good brunch!), quality teas from the Kusmi house (a brand I consume very regularly myself), and all that for a price that remains very reasonable (€22).
A spot to discover as soon as possible, then, before it gets stormed by brunch hunters and trendsetters.
Additionally, every month a special tea-and-coffee-based recipe is offered to customers.
The little extra: in the evening, Café Ludwig comes alive to the rhythm of rue des Martyrs, and it is with friends on the large benches or as a couple at the more intimate round tables that you can enjoy natural wines, cocktails, or a selection of fine spirits.
